Class anti-infectives
Action Binds to bacterial cell wall, causing cell death.
Indication/s Treatment of the Skin and skin structure infections,
Otitis media, Sinusitis, Respiratory infections,
Genitourinary infections. Management of ulcer disease
due to Helicobacter pylori. Unlabeled Use: Lyme
disease in children 8 yr.
Contraindication/s 1- Hypersensitivity to penicillins (cross-sensitivity
exists to cephalosporins and other beta-lactams).
2- Severe renal insufficiency.
3- Infectious mononucleosis, acute lymphocytic
leukemia, or cytomegalovirus infection.
Side effect/s 1- CNS: SEIZURES high doses
2- GI: PSEUDOMEMBRANOUS
COLITIS, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and increase
liver enzymes.
3- Derm: rash, urticaria.
4- Hemat: blood dyscrasias.
5- Misc: allergic reactions including
ANAPHYLAXIS, SERUM SICKNESS,
superinfection.
Common interaction/s with other
medication/s
. May increase the effect of warfarin. May
decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
Allopurinol may increase frequency of rash.
