Angle Modulation

Angle Modulation

Two Cases:

1) Frequency Modulation

 The instantaneous frequency of the carrier signal

is changed with respect to the message signal

2) Phase Modulation

 The phase of the carrier signal is changed

according to the variations in the message signal

The Angle of the carrier signal is varied

with the modulating signal m(t)

Frequency Modulation

 In PM the varies linearly with “the derivative of m(t)”

 To form FM signal, make to vary with m(t) only.

m ( t )

Instantaneous frequency for FM

The angle becomes:

where is a constant

The Resulting FM wave is:

Frequency Modulation of a sine wave

A Basic FM

Example 5.1 (B.P. Lathi)

k (^) f and kp are 2 105 and 10 , respectively

Sketch FM and PM waves for the following signal in figure (a) below

Hint: PM for m(t) is FM for m ( t )

Example 5.2 (B.P. Lathi)

k (^) f and kp are and , respectively 2

2 105

Sketch FM and PM waves for the digital signal in figure (a) below

Hint: PM for m(t) is FM for m ( t )
