Us Wool

Sheep are one of the most common animal which is found across the world and in various species. They are the most common animal which gives us wool. The average lifespan of a sheep is from 10 – 12 years. They are herbivores. And an adult sheep weigh 45 – 100 Kg (Female) and 45 – 160 Kg (Male). And their scientific name is ‘Ovis Aries’.

Camel

The fine, shorter fibre of the insulating undercoat, 4 – 13 cm long, is the product generally called Camel hair, or Camel wool. The hair is not usually gathered by shearing or plucking; it is most often collected as the animal sheds its coat. And there are two types of camels, the Bactrian Camels and the Dromedary Camel. About 90% of the world's camels are Dromedary Camels. Average lifespan of a Dromedary and Bactrian Camel is approximately 40 years. And an adult Dromedary camel can weigh from 400 – 600 Kg and a Bactrian Camel might weigh around 480 Kg.

The fur of the musk oxen is very long. The thick outer coat can reach nearly 100cm in length, which is one of the longest of any animal. Under these guard hairs is a short, fine wool called qiviut. It is eight times warmer than wool and it is very lightweight. The undercoat is shed each year and people gather the wool and knit it into clothing. And the lifespan of musk oxen is approximately the 12 – 20 years (Adult). And an adult weigh from 180 – 410 kg.

Llama

Llamas are very social animals and live with others as a herd. Llamas are normally sheared every two years, the hair’s length ranges from 8 to 25 cm. Llama fibre is used, for woven fabrics made into outerwear. It is also used for rugs, rope, and fabric. The lifespan of a Llama is approximately 20 years. And an adult Llama weigh around 130 – 200 Kg. Scientific name of Llama is ‘Lama Glama’.

Angora Rabbit

Angora wool is a fluffy fibre that comes from the soft, thick coats of angora rabbits. Angora Rabbits can’t sheared in the way sheeps are done, it has to be sheared carefully, it would not be painful for the rabbits if it is done correctly. After shearing many of the rabbits go into severe shock. The average lifespan of an Angora Rabbit is 7

  • 12 years. And the adult weigh around 2 – 5 Kg.

Yak

Yak wool is one of the most precious types of wool in the world. No wonder, because the wool of the Asian cattle has numerous unique features and grants an optimal wearing comfort. It is as soft and delicate as cashmere, keeps warmer than sheep’s wool, regulates moisture, is breathable and even allergy-friendly. The average lifespan of Yak is approximately 20 years. And an adult Yak weigh around Male: 350 – 580 kg, Female: 220 – 260 kg.
