AP HUMAN GEOGRAPHY

POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY

The study of human political organization of the earth. Study political organization at three scales

  • Supranational (multiple countries joined together)
  • National (country)
  • Subnational (local)

Political Geography

A recognized right to control a territory both politically and militarily Under international law states are sovereign

Sovereignty

  • Has space or territory with recognized boundaries
  • Has a permanent population
  • Has economic activity and an organized economy – regulates foreign and domestic trade and issues money
  • Has the power of social engineering, such as education
  • Has a transportation system
  • Has a government which provides public services and police power
  • Has sovereignty. No other state exercises control over the territory
  • Has external recognition by other states

Qualifications for Statehood

A very small State, such as Singapore.
