A. Teaching

Clearly demonstrated evidence of high quality teaching is an essential criterion for appointment, advancement, or promotion. Under no circumstances will promotion to Associate Professor be made unless there is clear documentation of ability and diligence in the teaching role. At UCLA great attention is paid to every faculty member’s ability and achievement as a teacher, and there are numerous awards for good teaching.

Textbooks, reports, circulars, and similar publications are considered evidence of creativity in teaching and service.

CAP Considers :

Teaching awards Peer review evaluations Student, Resident, Fellow evaluations New course design, new teaching techniques…

TEACHING

B. Research and Creative Work

Publications in research should be evaluated, not merely enumerated. There should be evidence that the candidate is continuously and effectively engaged in creative activity of high quality and significance.

Textbooks, reports, circulars, and similar publications should be considered evidence of creativity in teaching and service. However, contributions by faculty members to the professional literature or to the advancement of professional practice or professional education should be judged creative work when they present new ideas or original scholarly research.

Must be extramurally, and competitively funded (e.g. NIH, not from private industry). You must be the Principal Investigator.

CAP Considers :

Although the quantity of publications is important, CAP considers their quality to be even more important.
