Q1. a. What is a foundation and why are they necessary for the construction of a building? (8 marks)

b. List and discuss what influences the choice of foundations (8 marks)

c. At an approximate scale of 1:10, sketch and FULLY label all components of a typical strip foundation and rising walls, identifying their function. (10 marks) d. What is the function of a floor in a building? (7.5 marks)

Q2. a. Prior to purchasing a site, one should visit it and the adjoining area. Briefly discuss the “rules for site visits” – the observations and records that should be made. (8 marks)

b. Briefly discuss what should be included in a site investigation. (8 marks)

c. What is the function of a threshold? (4 marks)

d. At an approximate scale of 1:5, sketch and FULLY label all components of a typical threshold and window cill, when incorporated in domestic construction. (13.5 marks)
