Longitude and Latitude
Longitude
• Longitude measures the distance east or west of the Prime Meridian, which passes
through Greenwich, England. It is also expressed in degrees, from 0° at the Prime
Meridian to 180° east or west.
• The lines that run from the North Pole to the South Pole and converge at the poles are
called Lines of Longitude.
• Runs vertically (north to south).
Latitude:
• Latitude measures the distance north or south of the Equator. It is expressed in degrees,
ranging from 0° at the Equator to 90° at the poles. These lines run parallel to the Equator.
• Equator (0°) divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
• Runs horizontally (east to west).
