Longitude and Latitude
Longitude
Longitude measures the distance east or west of the Prime Meridian, which passes
through Greenwich, England. It is also expressed in degrees, from 0° at the Prime
Meridian to 180° east or west.
The lines that run from the North Pole to the South Pole and converge at the poles are
called Lines of Longitude.
Runs vertically (north to south).
Latitude:
Latitude measures the distance north or south of the Equator. It is expressed in degrees,
ranging from 0° at the Equator to 90° at the poles. These lines run parallel to the Equator.
Equator (0°) divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
Runs horizontally (east to west).

Detail About Latitude and Longitude

Latitude Longitude

Range : 0° at the Equator to 90° at the poles. Range : 0° at the Equator to 90° at the poles. Northern latitudes are positive (e.g., 40° N). Southern latitudes are negative (e.g., 20° S). International Date Line : Roughly at 180° longitude, where the date changes by one day when crossed.

Coordinate System

  • How to Pinpoint Locations: Latitude and longitude work together to give a unique coordinate for any location.
  • Example: The coordinates for Lahore, Pakistan are 31.5204° N (latitude), 74.3587° E (longitude).

Difference between Latitude and Longitude

1. Reference Line:

Latitude: The reference line is the Equator (0° latitude).

Longitude: The reference line is the Prime Meridian (0° longitude), which

passes through Greenwich, England.
