STATISTICAL DISTRIBUTIONS

Probability distributions

  • Capital letters are used for the whole distribution of outcomes (called a random variable): ๐‘‹, ๐‘Œ
  • Lower case letters are used for a particular value of the random variable: ๐‘ฅ, ๐‘ฆ
  • Distributions can be presented in tables
  • A discrete uniform distribution is one where the probabilities are all uniform (i.e. equal)
  • As usual, ฯƒ ๐‘ = 1 Mr Bicen selects three letters at random, one at a time without replacement, from the word โ€˜MATHEMATICSโ€™. The discrete random variable ๐‘‹ represent the number of times he selects the letter โ€˜Mโ€™. Complete the probability distribution for ๐‘‹ ๐‘ฅ 0 1 2 ๐‘ƒ(๐‘‹ = ๐‘ฅ)

Calculating probabilities for the binomial distribution

The binomial distribution ๐‘‹~๐ต(๐‘›, ๐‘) ๐‘‹ can be modelled with the binomial distribution ifโ€ฆ

  • Fixed number of trials, ๐‘›
  • Fixed probability, ๐‘
  • Independent trials
  • Two outcomes, success or failure ๐‘ƒ ๐‘‹ = ๐‘ฅ =

๐‘๐‘ฅ^1 โˆ’ ๐‘ ๐‘›โˆ’๐‘ฅ

โ€ฆ but can also be found on the calculator! Cumulative probabilities ๐‘ƒ ๐‘‹ < ๐‘Ž = ๐‘ƒ ๐‘‹ > ๐‘Ž = ๐‘ƒ ๐‘‹ โ‰ฅ ๐‘Ž =

For ๐‘‹~๐ต 20 , 0. 4 , calculate:

a) ๐‘ƒ ๐‘‹ = 8

b) ๐‘ƒ(๐‘‹ โ‰ค 3 )

c) ๐‘ƒ ๐‘‹ > 9

d) ๐‘ƒ(๐‘‹ โ‰ฅ 5 )

Given that ๐‘Œ~๐ต( 25 , 0. 3 ),

a) find the largest value of ๐‘Ž such that ๐‘ƒ ๐‘Œ โ‰ค ๐‘Ž < 0. 05

b) find the smallest value of ๐‘Ž such that ๐‘ƒ ๐‘Œ > ๐‘Ž < 0. 05
