Problem 3: Vacuum window
Design an optical window to a vacuum chamber.
Requirements:
6 in diameter clear aperture
/4 rms wavefront distortion ( = 633 nm)
1 atm pressure on the outside (10-6 Torr on the inside)
Transmit light from 0.4 – 0.7 µm
Thermal: inside the chamber is 77K
Interface: Mate with a 10” diameter stainless steel flange:
10” ID
12” OD
(10.25” diameter O-ring)
11” diameter bolt circle, 18 bolts, 3/8”
A) Write the requirements for window.
B) Perform preliminary design.
a. Specify the window
b. Sketch the geometry
Show how to estimate performance and survival
