COLLEGE: College Of Information and Communication Technology (CoICT). PROGRAMME: BSc. In Computer Engineering and Information Technology. COURSE: CL 111 Communication skills for Engineers. ASSIGNMENT TYPE: TAKE HOME ASSIGNMENT. ASSIGNMENT QUESTION: Exemplify five (5) verbal signpost applied by three (3) course instructors in three different courses and show how the verbal signpost facilitate note taking during the lecture sessions.
Verbal signpost refers to spoken cues or signal that helps to guide listeners through a conversation, presentation or lecture. Catter (1999) defines verbal signpost as, spoken words or phrases that calls listeners’ attention during a lecture or presentation. Whereas, Note taking refers to the practice of writing pieces of information, often in an informal or unstructured manner or simply shorthand. Also as defined by (Paok,….), note taking is referred to as a process of taking and recording information from lecturers, presentations, readings or other sources to aid in learning and later reference. As depicted by (Paok,…..), note taking is considered to involve three core principles which includes, active engagement, organization of notes, and efficient review. To make these principles work, the consideration of verbal signpost plays a crucial role. Therefore, verbal signpost facilitates effective note taking. The following points shows how verbal signpost facilitate note taking during lecture sessions by exemplifying from three course instructors; Emphasis signposts. These are signposts that are used to show or highlight important information during the lecture or presentation session. These signposts are also used to show important ideas on the given topic which when misinterpreted may cause confusion on the topic. They include phrases like “important thing to note”, “one crucial thing to remember”, and “point to note”. For example, Dr Mahundi said that “Point to note on arrays, arrays hold data of the same type” during his lecture on Arrays. The use of emphasis phrase “point to note” shows that on Arrays the important thing to remember is that arrays hold data of the same type. This facilitates note taking as students gets to know important point to notice when talking of arrays in programming. Therefore, verbal signpost facilitates effective note taking. Questions and answers phrases. These are phrases that are used during presentation to guide users through a structured discussion. The signposts include phrases like, “What is this?”, “Why is this?” also questions for seeking audience attention to the topic like “is it understood?” These signposts allow active engagement during the presentation or lecture sessions. In note taking questions and answers signposts, prompts students to mentally prepare for the upcoming information about the asked question. Also as proposed by Paok (…….) that effective note taking involves active engagement, then questions and answers signposts provides active engagement through structured discussion. For example, Dr Naiman asked that, “What is the power rating of Tanzania National Grid System? Let’s discuss in groups” on his lecture about
inverse matrix method solves the simultaneous equation by using the adjoint of the matrix equation” on his lecture about solving systems linear equations. Therefore, verbal signposts are crucial for note taking. In essence, the verbal signposts serve a crucial role for facilitating note taking by signalizing changes in topic, emphasizing important information, introducing lists, or summarizing key points. By recognizing and structuring their notes based on these verbal cues, students can enhance their ability to organize, understand, and later review their notes effectively.
