Topics

  • Atomic Models

Who are these men?

500 BC, Democritus

  • Matter is made of discrete particles.
  • He named the smallest piece of matter “Atomos,” meaning “not to be cut.”

1808 Dalton The Billiard Ball Model Matter composed of small spherical particles.

1808 Dalton Dalton’s hypothesis: a. The matter are composed of discrete atoms. b. For a given matter these atoms are all identical and each atom has the same weight. c. compounds are formed when atoms of different matters combine in a simple ratio Dalton’s hypothesis is taken as the first discovery of the atomic nature of matters.
