AUDIO-VISUAL RESOURCES
INTRODUCTION
The advance in technology has given rise to information explosion. This can be seen through the
ever-increasing amount of information generated on daily basis. Information is recorded in
books. Apart from books, large quantities of information also appear in audio-visual materials.
Users should be able to access the information in audio -visual format if they have them at their
disposal.
DEFINITION
CATEGORIES
Audio- visual materials are categorized into three. They are
Audio materials: These are materials that have to do with the sense of hearing. The instruction
is through sound. Their examples include
Radio
Audio books
Audio tapes/compact disc
Telephone
Public address system
Visual materials:
These ones impact through the sense of sight. Examples include
Photographs
Maps
Charts
Illustrations
Posters
Slides
Transparences
Graphic materials
Audio-visual materials:
These are materials that appeal to both the sense of hearing and that of sight. Materials included

ADVANTAGES

They are used for effective communication where there is lack of sufficient infrastructure and space and where the class is large.

Some audio -visual materials entertain people while they are learning and every learner enjoys a relaxed atmosphere. Audio-visual materials help in this regard.

HANDLING, STORAGE AND SHELVING OF AUDIO-VISUAL MATERIALS

There are different ways of handling, storing and shelving audio-visual materials, depending on the software.

HANDLING

  • Audio materials

Users should clean their hands before handling recordings of all types. The playing surfaces should not be touched. Discs and tapes should be handled by their outer edges only. Fingers should not be placed on their surfaces.

STORAGE

Shelves:

Audio and videotapes, multimedia kits, discs and motion picture films can be kept on the shelves

These are used to store pictures, posters, guides and transparencies. The room where all types of audio-visuals are stored must be air-conditioned.
