Evolution and Adaptations: Newts, Snakes, and Human Health, Quizzes of Biology

Various topics related to evolution, including the evolutionary arms race between newts and snakes, the significance of color in nature, the adaptations of non-poisonous plant-eating snakes, the history and impact of malaria, the importance of combination drug therapy, the antiscience movements, and the denial of evolution. It also touches upon hemochromatosis, a hereditary disease.

TERM 1
7: Newts vs.
Snakes
DEFINITION 1
Newts have poisin toxin called TTX an d the only predator known to
be resistant to it is the garter snake. The resistance varies as
doesthe TTX production and differen t species exhibit new degrees
of resistance and toxicity. **The var iation in predator and prey
sets for CO EVOLUTIONARY arms rac e in which selection favors
increasingly resistant snakes and inc reasingly toxic newts.
TERM 2
7What are the advantages and disadvantages
of all colors?
DEFINITION 2
Vitamin D is made by the skin from sunlight; Darker skin
color indicates less vitamin D present in the skin. BUT skin
containing large amounts of melanin, or darker skin, provides
greater protection from UV rays. As a result, boths colors
have both.
TERM 3
7What are the adaptations of the non-
poisonous snakes eating plants that would
make them sick?
DEFINITION 3
the predators and they prey (the snakes and the newts) will
both evolve to be better than the other.
TERM 4
7 Malaria
DEFINITION 4
1 biggest human killer! Carried by mosquitoes. Malaria dates
back all the way to China in 2700 BC and is attributed to the
fall of several major populations! Malarias effect on humans
is relatively recent w the spread of agriculture, 10,000 yrs
ago. **Today it effects 300-500 million ppl, and 2 million die
from it every year!
TERM 5
7 What is the significance of combination drug
therapy?
DEFINITION 5
The chance of an organism harborin g resistant mutations to 2 or
more drugs is a product of the freque ncy of resistance to each
drug AKA there's a much slimmer ch ance of the rise of resistance
to drug combinations. Combo drug therapy has been the strategy
that has made all the difference in c ombating HIV. Hits parasite w
multiple drugs and appears to work we ll.

7 What is the significance of combination drug

therapy?

DEFINITION 5 The chance of an organism harboring resistant mutations to 2 or more drugs is a product of the frequency of resistance to each drug AKA there's a much slimmer chance of the rise of resistance to drug combinations. Combo drug therapy has been the strategy that has made all the difference in combating HIV. Hits parasite w multiple drugs and appears to work well.

TERM 6

9: Three Movements Known in regard to anti-

science movements

DEFINITION 6

  1. Soviet Union: Anti-genetics Movement. Lysenko promoted vernalization; said hereditary changes occurred in plants in response to environ changes; suggested Nature man could be shaped in any way, went against genetics. 2 Chiropractics: campaign among chiropractors. It denied the germ theory of disease & its subsequent & still active opposition to science. 3. 1950s Anti-Vaccination Moves: Chiropractors opposed germ theory which lead to opposition of vaccination; ex the polio vaccine. TERM 7

9: Six common arguments for the denial of

evolution

DEFINITION 7

1. Doubt the science. 2.Question the motives and integrity of

scientists. 3. Magnify disagreements among scientists, and

cite gadflies as authorities. 4. Exaggerate potential harm. 5.

Appeal to personal freedom. 6. Acceptance repudiates key

philosophy.

TERM 8

10: 2 Examples where we as human beings

are shaping the evolution of other animals:

DEFINITION 8

1. Big Horn Sheep: Trophy hunting is causing them to

develop smaller racks (horns). 2. Overfishing of the Atlantic

Cod: has made them genetically smaller and harder to

harvest. ALSO, by overfishing larger fish have developed

differently.

TERM 9

1: What is hemochromotosis?

DEFINITION 9 a hereditary disease that disrupts the way the body metabolizes iron. W it, the body always thinks that it doesn't have enough iron so continues to absorb iron unabated; this iron loading has deadly consequences. The excess iron is deposited into the bod ultimately damaging joints, major organs, and overall body chemistry. *Can lead to liver failure, heart failure, diabetes, arthritis, infertility, and even cancer. Can lead to death. TERM 10
