Biodiversity Threats and Mitigation Measures, Study notes of Environmental Science

A worksheet that guides students in researching the factors threatening mammal and bird species and the actions that can be taken to mitigate or eliminate these threats. The goal is to promote biodiversity and raise awareness of the problem. The worksheet includes a procedure for dividing the class into groups, researching the threats and mitigation measures, and creating an ad for the endangered species. The teacher will then summarize the findings.

WORKSHEET 1 Biodiversity
Summary
The students will research about mammal species and birds, trying to find out
what are the factors which are threatening these species and then what actions
should be implemented in order to minimize or eliminate the identified threats.
Goals
- identify factors of threat to populations of mammals and birds.
- recognise the importance of having behaviours promoting biodiversity.
- implementing measures that allow the mitigation of threats.
Suggestion
With the information gathered the class will be able to elaborate a campaign
to raise awareness to the problem all over the school.
To this campaign they can produce or use several materials such as ads,
photos, books, booklets, videos, songs and others.
Procedure
1. Preparation: divide the class in groups and choose a number.
(Having based your list of mammals and endangered birds) give each group
a species without letting the others know.
2. Research: each group should research which are the main threats,
mitigation measures and action to protect the targeted species implemented
or to implement.
3. Ad elaboration: with all the information gathered each group should write an
ad. The ad must be written in the name of the endangered species, saying
the threats they are under and the action that must be taken to save them.
4. Presentation: each group should read their ad and the class will try to guess
which specie it is.
5. Synthesis: the teacher will do a summary of the threat factors, mitigation
measures and protection / conservation action taking place.

BUILDING A BIRD FEEDER

Birds in a winter garden

During the winter months birds have few grains to eat.

This season is very difficult for them to survive so to have feeders is very important to help them until there is food again.

How to do it?

1 Fill half a cup of plastic with water and mix it well

2 Add 1table spoon of flout to the seeds and 2 table spoons of several seeds

3 Put a small tree branch in the cup

4 Put the mix in the micro wave for 40 seconds full power

5 Let it cool, take it out of the cup, tie a string to the tree branch, pick up a tree and hang up the feeder!
