Week 5: Virtual Discussion This week, we are learning about structure and function of skin. Now let's turn our attention to diseases and abnormalities that can arise in the integument. For your initial post address one of the following topics:

- Discuss how skin contributes to maintenance of homeostasis. Skin contributes to maintenance of homeostasis by helping to regulate body temperature in two ways by using thermoregulation: releasing sweat and adjusting blood flow. >Thermoregulation Through Release of Sweat: “Eccrine sweat glands, whose primary function is cooling the body, release sweat. Water has a high heat capacity, so when the watery sweat evaporates, it carries away a significant amount of heat with it. This process is known as evaporative cooling .” (Edapt.ai. 2022). >Thermoregulation by Adjusting Blood Flow in the Dermis: “Blood vessels dilate when the body is warm, a process known as vasodilation , which allows more blood flow through the dermis and increases heat loss from the body. Blood vessels constrict when the body is cold, a process known as vasoconstriction , which reduces blood flow through the dermis to decrease heat loss through the skin.” (Edapt.ai. 2022). - Discuss types of skin cancers. “There are three types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Their names represent the cell types in which the cancer originates” (Edapt.ai. 2022). >Basal Cell Carcinoma: The most common type of skin cancer. It appears as shiny, small bump that often enlarges with a “pearly” edge. Seldom metastasizes and originates from the cells in the stratum basale (Edapt.ai. 2022).

Fifth Degree Burns: Burns that burn down to the bone. Can lead to death if burnt tissue is not amputated (Worrell, L. n.d.-b). Example: Major industrial fire. Conclusion In conclusion, the integumentary system is very versatile. In addition to providing protection, it also contributes to the maintenance of homeostasis. Unfortunately, with every system in the body, diseases and abnormalities may arise. In the integumentary system, diseases like cancer caused by cellular abnormalities. The integumentary system has multiple layers which is the reasoning for the different types of burn degrees.
