Book Tasting 12:15 – 1:35 (80 minutes) Goals: Discuss literature’s impact on empathy. Allow 9th^ graders to “taste” the books they can choose from for book club. Introduce students to various types of literature and encourage agency. Explain the goals, expectations and rationale for the activity. Setup needs: 8 “stations” at tables in the library, or other location, with copies of books and “menus” Make “menus” for the event – a 1 pager for each book with quotes, reviews, links to social media reviews, and a brief description. Be as creative as you like. QR code with link to survey/exit ticket Graphic organizer for students to take notes Student needs: Leave backpacks outside. Bring a pen/pencil. Use your phone only when prompted. 5 minutes: Why are we here! Why read? (One of the best ways to build empathy, compassion, and awareness of self/others) We hope you can find a mirror and/or a window book. What are those? (Ask students – crowdsource response) 10 minutes: Brainstorm and share: what are genres? What do we know we like? What are we curious about? What have we never read? Why? What are CWs and why do we include them here? How do YOU react when you see a CW that resonates with you?
Why are some words like “suicide” or “death” often bleeped out on social media? But not on your book menus? (get student responses) o Not because they are “bad” or hurtful, though they can bring up upsetting memories. Because they lose money. It’s not profitable! o We include them because they are real things. Everyone will pass away and everyone will lose somebody they love. Reading can help give us tools to manage this, if and how we are ready. Explain the rotation Get a “taste”! Read the “menu” on each table. Note the CWs. Yes, use your phone to scan the QR codes! If you are using them for other things, you’ll turn them in until the end of the unit. Read the first few pages, read the back, take a look at the artwork. Check StoryGraph, GoodReads, social media. o Solo activity, make your own choices but share enthusiasm! 😊 Take notes as you go. Hear the “bell” --> go to the next table 6 minutes per book = 48 minutes total 10 min Survey to rank choices as exit ticket. Use any online survey tool.
