Q1. (a) Highlight the main differences between bored and driven piles, and outline the various forms of each as well as the basic installation processes involved. (6 marks)

(b) In relation to a raft foundation under a domestic dwelling, describe the structure of it and use basic sketches to illustrate the construction process involved. (3 marks)

(c) Identify the critical path(s) and calculate the project duration for the following construction process, using an activity-on-arrow diagram: (8 marks)

Q4. (a) Build up a unit rate for each of the following items, include for 6% overheads and 10% profit:

Q5. (a) Discuss the alternative methods of structural fire protection in a structural steel framed building. (9 marks)

(b) Explain, with examples, the difference between passive and active measures to achieve fire protection? (4 marks)

(c) Give a brief explanation and outline the function of each of the following elements within the Bill of Quantities:

  • list of principle quantities (3 marks)
  • preamble (3 marks)
  • dayworks schedule (3 marks)
  • method-related charges (3 marks)

Q6. You have been appointed as site engineer in the demolition and rebuild of your local school:

(a) Prepare a complete checklist and discuss what should be included in a site setup plan for the project. (10 marks)

(b) With whom do you consider it necessary to discuss and agree your site plan, on a project like this? What are the items that need to be included in the site establishment? (6 marks)

(c) Discuss what plans you would put in place for materials storage for the project – your answer should outline the different types of materials that will be used on a development of this type. (9 marks)
