SECTION C: LONG MULTI-COMPONENT QUESTIONS (50%) It is suggested

that you spend no more than 50 minutes on this section of the paper.

Answer ALL questions in this section

Patient SM is a chronic drug user. He has been addicted to Cannabis and MDMA for several years. SM will take MDMA when he attends raves and reports feelings of empathy towards his peers and a strong desire to dance having taken the drug. SM takes cannabis more regularly and believes that it helps him to relax. His friends and family report than he can be lacking in focus and appears to have difficulty with tasks involving his short term memory. SM has tried to give up the drugs on several occasions however, whenever he is in a situation where he hears music which he associates with the raves he feels compelled to take the drug and relapses.

  1. Discuss how MDMA exerts its effects on the brain and how this accounts for the feelings that SM reports (15 marks)

  2. Discuss the role of the hippocampal formation in memory processing (15 marks)

  3. Explain why SM’s chronic Cannabis use could account for his poor short term memory (10 marks)

  4. Using theories of learning, suggest why certain types of music might play a role in SM’s relapses. (10 marks)
