Recent Trends & Emerging Business Environment in Nepal For a long period of time, the Nepal Government has accepted the mixed economic policy where both private and state enterprises have equally participated in economic activities. However, there were some restrictions on private sectors in some basic and core industries. The Government has to protect the state enterprises by providing subsidies and granting monopoly power in production and distribution in their own sector of business. After the restoration of democracy in 1990, great changes have been experienced in the political, economic, socio-cultural and technological environment in Nepal. This event has created new opportunities and threats in economic activities. The government has adopted economic liberalization policy and emphasis has been given to private entrepreneurship. Besides, many public enterprises were privatized to minimize the role of the government in business activities. Nepal has become a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) which has totally changed the business environment. The following are the recent trend and emerging business environments in Nepal:
1. Emergence of Open Market Economy: After the restoration of democracy in 1990, the government has adopted a liberal and open market economic policy. In this policy, economic freedom has been given to private entrepreneurs by minimizing administrative barriers in licensing, registration, incorporation etc. Private enterprises and entrepreneurs have got the freedom to choose the line of business on the basis of their interests. Besides, the government has privatized many public enterprises and also withdrawn the monopoly power of public enterprises in production and distribution. 2. Increasing Role of Private Sectors: The open market economy has increased the role of private sectors in economic activities. They have started to play major roles in the economic development of the nation. They invest not only in general lines of business but also in core areas of economic activities. The Government eliminated the monopoly power of public enterprises in hydropower, telecommunication, water supply, airlines etc. 3. Private Investment in Infrastructure Development: The free-market economic policy of the government has also encouraged private investment in the infrastructure development of the nation. Private companies including foreign investors started to invest in the infrastructure area of the nation consisting of hydropower, telecommunication, transportation, water supply, health, education etc. Such involvement of private entrepreneurs in infrastructure development helps to boost the economic development of the nation. 4. Emergence of Multinational Companies: The economic liberalization policy of the government has opened the door to multinational companies to perform business activities in Nepal. They have participated in commercial, industrial and also in auxiliary services through a joint venture with Nepalese entrepreneurs. Generally, they invest in banking, finance, insurance, soft drink, cold drink, hotel industries, education, telecommunication, hydropower etc. The developed concept of globalization and entering to WTO has created a great scope of business for multinational companies in Nepal.
5. Growth of Service Sectors: There has been a rapid growth of service sectors in Nepal in recent years. The business is diverted from manufacturing business to service sectors. New private enterprises have evolved to perform business in the service sector. Such service sectors consist of a hotel, restaurant, transportation, telecommunication, newspaper, e-mail and internet, computer software, e-commerce, education, radio and television, health etc. At present service sectors have attracted huge investment in recent years. 6. Development of Information Economy: The rapid development of information technology (IT) has also affected the Nepalese business. The use of IT resources consisting of computer programs, e-mail, internet, network system, e-commerce, fax etc. increased the working efficiency of business organizations. Many business organizations like banks, finance companies, educational institutions, hotels and restaurants, telecommunications, airlines, manufacturing and trading organizations use IT resources. Besides, NGOs and INGOs are also in the front line to use IT resources. Therefore, at present information technology has taken as an important component of economic activities in Nepal. 7. Emergence of Consumerism: The evolution of the free-market economy has diverted the concept of seller's market to consumers' market. The open market policy has developed a competitive environment among the manufacturers and suppliers and has provided selection facilities to the consumers. Business organizations have developed different strategies to draw the attention of customers and to satisfy them. Liberalization policy has facilitated free excess of foreign goods and services in the Nepalese market and customers can purchase on the basis of their own choice. Nowadays, luxurious goods of the past like computers, refrigerators, motorcycles, rice cookers, washing machines, cooking gas etc. have become basic needs. 8. Workforce Diversity: Liberal economy policy of the government has created more scope for economic activities. The population dimension is also changing. People having diversity in age, gender and ethnicity started to involve in many organizations. The average age of people is in increasing trend and that is reason employee having different age groups are working together. Similarly, more women are also getting involved in the workplace. In multinational companies employees having different ethnic groups are working together for common objectives. 9. Changing Role of Government: At present government's role has changed from regulator to facilitator to promote economic activities. The government started to enact new laws and regulations for encouraging private sectors to involve in business activities. It has eliminated many administrative barriers for promoting private economic activities. It started to invest huge capital for the development of infrastructure facilities in the country. It has started in participating private enterprises and entrepreneurs and their representatives while doing any economic agreement with friendly nations. 10. Increasing Online Business: The development of information technology and social network system initiated for online business. The evolution of email and internet systems created a revolution in communication systems. People started to purchase and sale of goods and services by using the internet by using various online (social) platforms such as messenger, e-sewa, flip-card, twitter, instagram, viber, whatsapp and many other websites. It brings convenience both to the customers and also to the suppliers in general.
