Ensiling Machine
In the market we have modern compressors that has been widely used for compressing hays, wastes, garbage, and many raw materials to produce final products like briquettes, bricks etc. These compressors are efficient but complex and expensive at the same time. Today these compressors have found applications in agricultural sectors and, recently in feed block production. In livestock farming, scarcity of food is a major issue during the off-season (dry and winter seasons). Often these farmers store hays and straws in large pile which is not always enough to sustain through the off-season. Moreover, majority of the people involved in agriculture in our country are low to middle class level, and hence such a high investment equipment is not feasible. Therefore, there is a need to develop a simple machine with enough compressive capacity, portability, simpler operation and economic production and operation. Feed block is a compact form of food material fed to livestock such as hays, grains, leaves and floral residues with sweetening and nutritive additives.
As seen Kathmandu University area, the hays and other food material are feed directly to the livestock on day to day basis. There are no additives in the food material provided to the livestock so there is comparatively low milk production from the livestock and lesser weight of the livestock. Since the feeding to the livestock is day to day basis, there is no provision of food storage for the dry season, which sometimes result in the scarcity of food materials for the livestock.
We observed the local community around the KU area and asked to the locals about the feeding technique for the livestock. They use traditional approach while feeding the livestock i.e. cutting the hays, straws, etc. directly to the livestock and they have no provision for the storage.
Then after collection of the relevant data, we started to design a new and innovative product for the purpose of compressing the food materials. We talked with Mr. Pratisthit Lal Shrestha, lecturer of our department about our project. We also did background research on these fields to gain enough knowledge through internet and research papers.
Since there is no provision for the storage of the food, people often face the problem of feeding the livestock during dry season. Also, some additives and preservatives are added while making the feed block, which enhance the nutritional value of the food materials. The increased nutrition levels help to increase the milk production rate and also the nutritional value of the milk itself. It also help the livestock to gain significant amount of weight. Another benefit of the compressing the food materials is that it occupies less space so significant amount of space can be saved.
