Q : 1 You were given two acidic acids and asked to distinguish between them using Ferric chloride test. The results for both were Light brown precipitates. Write down chemical equations and identify the compounds. THE ANSWER : Compounds are Succinic and Benzoic acids

Q 2 : In most carboxylic acid tests, Tollen's reagent must be

prepared in the time of use. Why?

THE ANSWER:

  • Tollen’s reagent which is ammonical silver nitrate, because of its short shelf life it is freshly prepared in laboratory during the time of reaction. If remains for long time , it will decomposes to form explosive precipitate. Also may give inaccuracy in result. After the test has been performed, the resulting mixture should be acidified with dilute acid before disposal .These precautions are to prevent the formation of the highly explosive fulminating silver , which is almost silver azide AgN 3.

Q 3 : Formic acid is more readily oxidized compared with

other acids

THE ANSWER:

  • Formic acid is different in term of structure from other acids , because it contains distinctive carboxylic group for acids ( COOH-) and terminal carbonyl group ( CHO-) that is characteristic of aldehydes , thus it is variant in its properties than other acids. Furthermore its acidity is weak and easily lose its proton .Upon oxidation, we get carbon dioxide Co 2 and water H 2 O
