Alex and Jordan, who are friends, are working together on a school group project. Alex has been consistently meeting deadlines and contributing to the project, but Jordan has missed a few important meetings and hasn’t put in much effort. As the deadline approaches, Alex becomes increasingly frustrated and feels unappreciated for the extra work. This is causing tension between the two, and Alex is contemplating confronting Jordan, possibly in a heated conversation. Case Questions:
- Self-Awareness: What emotions is Alex experiencing, and how might these emotions influence the way Alex approaches Jordan?
- Alex is experiencing frustrations and feeling unappreciated. These emotions may influence Alex approach to Jordan negatively, Alex may become aggressive and on a bad mood in approaching Jordan. What steps could Alex take to better understand the root of these emotions before confronting Jordan?
- Alex can keep calm, and introspect to find the roots of the emotions Alex's is feeling, Alex also needs to understand the emotions and to control himself/herself.
- Self-Regulation: How could Alex manage their frustration to avoid escalating the conflict?
- Alex can manage his frustration by assessing his feelings first, why is he feeling frustrated, what makes him frustrated. Have a short break or allotted time to reflect in order think for the right approach, or solutions and to avoid escalating conflict.
- Communication: What communication strategies can Alex use to express their concerns without making Jordan feel defensive?
- Alex should directly tell his own concerns towards Jordan, stay calm and talk with a right tone in order for him to listen and work together to create solution for Alex's Concern. Alex should also accept Jordan's challenges that might not be the reason why he exerts effort, in this way this can create an open conversation and environment to share with their own sides. How could using "I" statements (e.g., "I feel overwhelmed because I’ve been doing a lot of the work") help Alex convey their frustration more constructively?
- Using "I" statements can help Alex convey his message about his concerns because it makes the communication personal and avoid placing blame to one another. In this way by using "I" statements this let's Alex express his frustrations/stress while respecting Jordan's feelings. This would likely make Jordan emphatize and respond clearly and calmly, rather than feeling attacked and becoming defensive.
- Problem-Solving: If you were Alex, how would you propose a solution to ensure that both friends contribute equally to the project moving forward?
- If I were Alex, I would try to solve the problem by having a calm conversation with Jordan and inquire about the difficulties he is facing that is contributing to the lack of effort coming from him. I am aware that every one of us are facing battles we don't talk about, and oftentimes, those battles lead to burnouts that affect everything that we do. Afterwards, I will do my utmost to help address the underlying root cause and propose a setup where we will divide the responsibilities for the group project and see to it that we meet important deadlines on time.
What specific steps could Alex and Jordan take to improve communication and collaboration for the remainder of the project?
- Alex and Jordan can have a heart-to-heart talk about the difficulties they are facing, like Alex being frustrated and feeling unappreciated by Jordan, and Jordan can talk about the reasons why there is little effort coming from him. They should put in mind that it's not always about the will to put in effort, sometimes, we just can't
- Long-Term Impact: How might Alex and Jordan’s friendship be affected by how this conflict is handled?
- Alex and Jordan can have a heart-to-heart talk about the difficulties they are facing, like Alex being frustrated and feeling unappreciated by Jordan, and Jordan can talk about the reasons and Jordan's friendship will take a heavy impact depending on how this conflict is handled. In case of a heated conversation between the two, they could say things they don't mean due to the surge of emotions they are feeling at the moment. However, if they do their best to resolve it in a calmer manner and Jordan puts in the effort to make Alex understand, then their friendship could be strengthened even more. As humans, we can only feel about what we understand. What role does emotional intelligence play in preserving their friendship while addressing the conflict?
- The role of emotional intelligence in preserving a friendship is very crucial. It dictates how each person will compromise with the other in case of conflicts. Conflict is inevitable between people in a relationship, but not all conflicts lead to a bad ending. When approached with an open mind, conflicts can enhance our understanding of one another.
