116 DENTAL MATERIALS

Objectives:

Identify the classification of cavities. Describe cavity preparation form and structure Discuss dental material properties Recall agencies and organizations regulating dental materials

Class I

◦Lingual pits of maxillary incisors.

Class I

◦Lingual groove and pit of maxillary molars.

◦Pits occurring in atypical areas caused by irregularities

in formation of enamel.

Class II

All proximal surface cavities of bicuspids and molars.

Class III

All proximal surface cavities on incisors and cuspids

which do not include the incisal edge.

Class V

All gingival one-third cavities.

Class VI

All cavities on the incisal, or occlusal edge where

attrition and wear has removed enamel and exposed

the dentin.

Cavity preparation form and structure

STEP 1: OUTLINE FORM STEP 2: RESISTANCE AND RETENTION FORM STEP 3: CONVENIENCE FORM STEP 4: REMOVAL OF CARIES STEP 5: REFINEMENT OF CAVITY WALLS AND MARGINS STEP 6: CAVITY DEBRIDEMENT

CAVITY TERMS

Axial Wall

◦ (^) The axial wall is the internal wall parallel to the long axis of the tooth.

Pulpal Wall (Floor)

◦ (^) The pulpal wall is the internal wall that is perpendicular to the long axis of the tooth and occlusal of the pulp.

External Wall

◦ (^) The external wall is the prepared surface that extends to the external tooth surface. ◦ (^) Such a wall takes the name of the tooth surface (or aspect) that the wall is adjacent to

POINT ANGLE

THE POINT OR CORNER FORMED BY THE JUNCTION OF 3 SURFACES

CAVITY TERMS

CAVOSURFACE MARGIN –
◦ LINE FORMED BY THE JUNCTION OF THE CAVITY PREPARATION AND THE TOOTH
BEVEL –
◦ ANGLE OF THE TOOTH PRPARATION AT THE CAVOSURFACE MARGIN
