An introduction to a research study on the use of figurative language in Susan Johnson's 2018 American teen romance film, To All The Boys I've Loved Before. The research aims to identify and describe the types of figurative language used in the movie script, and to understand their meanings. The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach and collects data through documentation and observation.

1.1. Background of the Research Literature is one of studies there are influential to human’s life. Literature is one way or human beings to express their feeling, thoughts, experiences, emotions, expectations, and faith. Literature does not have limitation on how you should do it. The people can express literature through many ways e.g. story, prose, and drama or play. Literature is the literary product of art, and the language used in literature is the language which is attractive for reader though sometimes it needs relatively long time to understand but it usually attracts people for its beauty (Louis, 2009:1). Literary language uses deeper language and different than the use of language in everyday activities. Figure language owned by a person is part of the diction closely related to those expressions individual or characteristic, or has high artistic value. Jones (1968:1) states literature divided into two groups. They are Literature of knowledge and literature (informative) as entertaining or literature of power (Imaginative). The writer of imaginative language uses figurative language in their writing. It provides the feelings and thoughts. Figurative language is words or expressions that carry more than their literal meaning (Stanford, 2003:48). An author conveys a different way to express and describe something likes idea, theme, and author’s feeling. The author uses the situation and condition of fact. The author use language to write the literary work. It can make the reader in positive effect. Figurative language is also used to make the words or phrases be more beautiful, more interesting, and make more clear the image. Hyperbole, metaphor, simile, personification, and irony are kinds of figurative language that use figures of speech. Figurative Language is not only used in poem, but also in lyrics, poetries, and screenplays or movie script. Movie is the entertainment for the people. Most the people have watched the movies. There are many kinds of movie; they are horror, romantic, action, and
cartoon. The movie is not only a source of entertainment, but also it can be a source of education. Communication, like dialogue is the most important parts in the movie. In this study the writer analyze the style of language, function and meaning in To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before Movie Script. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is a 2018 American teen romance film directed by Susan Johnson and starring Lana Condor, Noah Centineo, Janel Parrish, Anna Cathcart, Madeleine Arthur, Emilija Baranac, Israel Broussard and John Corbett. Based on Jenny Han's 2014 novel of the same name, it was released by Netflix on August 17, 2018. This realistic, non fiction, drama novel is entertaining yet hilarious. This book is targeted for young adults interested in the romance genre for the reason that in, To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before , Lara Jean, she is a 16 year old girl, Lara Jean Covey writes letters to all of her past loves, the letters are meant for her eyes only. Until one day when all the love letters are sent out to her previous loves. Her life is soon thrown into chaos when her foregoing loves confront her one by one. Lara Jean keeps her love letters in a hatbox her mother gave her. They aren't love letters that anyone else wrote for her; these are ones she's written. One for each boy that she loved before. When she writes she can pour her heart and soul and say all the things she would never say in real life, because her letters are for her eyes only. Until the day her secret letters are mailed, and suddenly Lara Jean's love life goes from imaginary to out of control. Teen Lara Jean Covey lives a normal, boring high school life until some unexpected letters get released to all her former crushes. These were love letters and were meant for her eyes only, until one day her sister Kitty sends them out in hopes to give Lara Jean a more interesting life. At school her life is thrown into turmoil when these boys start to approach her about their letters. Among these boys are Josh, who happens to be her next door neighbor and her older sister Margot's boyfriend, and Peter Kavinsky, her arch nemesis, Gen's boyfriend. Through out some very unusual events Lara Jean finds herself and maybe even a real relationship. Lara Jean Covey is a teenage girl who writes love letters when she gets a crush too big to handle but she never actually sends them. One day her deepest
Technique of collecting data used in this research are documentation by content analysis and observation. The steps of data collection are as follows: (1) downloading the movie and screenplay, (2) watching “ To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” movie, (3) reading the movie script carefully, (4) underlying for the sentence which contains figurative language, (5) coding the data, and (6) analyzing the data. 1.7. Benefit of the Research Lazar (2003:1) declares that figurative language can provide a useful springboard for integrated skills work and to stimulate reading, speaking, and writing skills. This phenomenon of language will bring many beneficial effects for anyone interested in psycholinguistic problems. This research can be a good way to introduce students with a variety of language styles and the meaning of language in movies. Typically, in a movie, the author makes a script with a language that means to see what their work might be interested in. Finally, this is a way for us to interpret every meaning in the film. 1.8. Systematic Organization of the Research The writer organizes it into four chapters. CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION In this chapter, the writer explains about the background, identification of the problems, limitation of the problems, statement of the problems, aims of the research, framework of the theory, methods of the research, and benefits of the research about the analysis of Figurative Language in Susan Johnson’s To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before Movie Script CHAPTER 2: FRAMEWORK OF THE THEORIES This chapter consists of the theories of figurative language, the use of figurative language, and the methods that will support the research.
