CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Characters are the persons represented in a dramatic or narrative work, who are
interpreted by the reader as being endowed with particular moral, intellectual, and
emotional qualities by inferences from what the persons say and their distinctive
ways of saying it the dialogue and from what they do the action (Abrams, 1971:
32). From the statement above it shows that Characters is person that appears in
dramatic or narrative work and that character doing the action or performance in
the story.
In a story, character is one of the most important things, because Character is one
of the elements of a story that is able to make the story more alive, realistic, and
sometimes even make the reader seem to be the character and dissolve in the
story. A story cannot live without a character in it.
In story, without a character doing the action of the story will not be possible,
because the events that occur in a story due to the action of the characters in the
story, because basically the events that appears in a story are sourced from the
characters.
In a story, there are many types of characters that exist in the literature. Kennedy
states about classification of characters which are flat and round character. A flat
character has only one stand out feature or at most a few of traits in a story
(Kennedy, 2007:75). As Kennedy states, so in a character there are flat and round
character that is if flat character has less proportion to the story meanwhile round

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Characters are the persons represented in a dramatic or narrative work, who are interpreted by the reader as being endowed with particular moral, intellectual, and emotional qualities by inferences from what the persons say and their distinctive ways of saying it the dialogue and from what they do the action (Abrams, 1971: 32). From the statement above it shows that Characters is person that appears in dramatic or narrative work and that character doing the action or performance in the story.

In a story, character is one of the most important things, because Character is one of the elements of a story that is able to make the story more alive, realistic, and sometimes even make the reader seem to be the character and dissolve in the story. A story cannot live without a character in it.

In story, without a character doing the action of the story will not be possible, because the events that occur in a story due to the action of the characters in the story, because basically the events that appears in a story are sourced from the characters.

Moreover the discussion of this novel is about the dynamic personality. Dynamic personality is the personality traits that come from the past and the drive to achieve something in the future, from there, it can change a person’s character, from having a good personality into a bad personality and from bad person to a good person caused by a desire in the future.

According Carl Gustav Jung In dynamic personality there are four parts that will be analyzed by the writer. The parts of dynamic personality consists of causality, teleology, progression, and regression. Dynamic of personality has an important part of the story, as a bridge between the previous story to the next story to make the reader understand about the dynamic personality that experiences by the character of the story that written by the author of the novel.

Then, Without the knowledge about dynamic personality it will hard for the reader to understand the meaning of he dynamic personality of the character in the story. Regarding to the issue; the writer chooses The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The dawn Treader novel. The novel provides insights of how the dynamic personality of Eustace Scrubb (one of the minor characters in The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Voyage Of The Dawn Treader novel). Dynamic personality is described and applied in the story.

Writer interested to analyze the dynamic personality in the novel of The Chronicles of Narnia; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis. He is a literary writer and literary expert from Great Britain, born into a Protestant family

mouse. Then, he always scream that he wants to comeback in his home but there is no path that can makes him comeback. So, forcefully he follows them to go to in Islands. For days, Eustace follows Narnians to navigate islands which are rarely visited. After he arrived in Dragon Island, Eustace Scrubb finds so many treasures in the Dragon’s cave. Treasure abundance makes Eustace Scrubb crazy and he also wants to bring all of the treasures.

The treasure consists of crowns, coins, rings, bracelets. Eustace Scrubb chooses to bring diamonds and packs it in his pocket. He also finds the bracelet, and then he wears the bracelet in his hand, although Eustace Scrubb knows that the bracelet is too big, but he still wear that bracelet in he put in his shoulder. Then, Eustace Scrubb does not know if the treasures make him becomes unfortunate. Eustace Scrubb transforms into the dragon because he wear the bracelet in his hand. Then, after Eustace wear that bracelet he turns into a dragon because of his own greed. After he transform into a dragon, he is looking for his cousins and Narnians. Then, he finds and gathered with them. After he becomes a dragon, he regrets that he has bad attitude with them when he comes in Narnia in the first.

Then, Aslan helps Eustace to transform into a human again. Then after he becomes as human he becomes more aware and kinder to his cousins and people in Narnia. Before he becomes human he always helps Narnians. Then, after he becomes human, he really try very hard to behave well. After that, Edmund, Lucy and Eustace meet Aslan, and Aslan tells that Edmund and Lucy do not return in Narnia anymore. Then they are all back in their world.

This research focuses on Eustace’s dynamic personality, Eustace does several thing inside the story like he treats his cousins when they are talking about Narnia. Eustace Scrubb assumes that Narnia is ridiculous. Then, he sets the mouse is the stupid animal, bad and emotional. When the story develops he becomes a good person and helps other.

The urgency of analyzing about the character of Eustace in Narnia is the topic has not been deeply discussed by other researchers. Therefore, this study can help other researcher to understanding the meaning of dynamic of personality through the Eustace character. Then, know that in the story there are some characters have different personality and can changes. There is contribution of this research to literary study.

This research is analyzed about character. The knowledge about the intrinsic element in literature is needed. Therefore, everyone who wants to analyze about character can learn through literary study.

Then, this research uses structural approach. Writer uses structural approach in the study, because this research analyze about the character and it is the part of intrinsic element. Then, theory that use by the writer is structuralism theory by Robert Stanton because to know the process about how the character is described in the story.

1.2 Problem Formulation

According to the background of study, the writer formulates the research question as follows:

1.5 Scope of the Study

The writer just focuses on the analysis of Eustace’s dynamic personality as depicted in The Chronicles of Narnia; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader novel. The writer studies the dynamic of personality of Eustace from the way the character of Eustace interacts with other characters. Then, the writer also explains how the character of Eustace changes his personality. The dynamic personality of Eustace can be seen from the dialogues and narration in the novel.
