Scout was to be a ham in the play. Jem carried Scout’s costume and walked her to the school on Halloween night. The costume was made of chicken wire and cloth. Suddenly, Cecil Jacobs jumped out and scared them. When Jem, Scout, and Cecil got to school, they put Scout’s costume backstage and then went to play the Halloween games. When the play began, Scout put on her ham costume. She waited a long time for her turn and got so tired that she fell asleep. Mrs. Merriweather called and called for her, and when Scout finally went out the crowd cheered. But Mrs. Merriweather got mad at Scout. After the play, Scout and Jem walked home. Scout was still in her ham costume. As they were walking, Jem heard someone following them. Suddenly, someone ran toward them. He grabbed Scout and Scout screamed. Then Scout heard Jem fighting with someone and Jem screamed. There was more noise, and Scout realized someone else was there. She saw a strange man carry Jem to the house. The doctor came and said them Jem was okay, but his arm was broken. The sheriff came and told them Bob Ewell was dead.
The doctor came in and asked everyone to leave. Scout, Atticus, Boo, and Mr. Tate went out on the front porch. Atticus thouoght that Jem was the one who killed Bob Ewell. He said that even though it was self defense, there would still be a trial. Mr. Tate said that Bob Ewell killed himself. He fell on his knife when he was running away. Atticus didn’t believe him, but Mr. Tate said that was the story he was going to tell everyone in town. He didn’t want Jem to have to go to court. Mr. Tate also said he wasn’t going to tell anyone about Boo Radley helping Jem and Scout, because then Boo would have a lot of attention from the townspeople. Boo wouldn’t like that and wasn’t used to it. Before Scout and Atticus went back in the house, Atticus told Boo thank you for saving his children.
Boo wanted to go in and say goodnight to Jem. Jem was sleeping in bed, and Boo went over to him. He patted Jem on the head, and then he asked Scout to take him home. They walked over to the Radley house and onto the porch. Boo went inside and shut the door. Scout never saw Boo again. Scout looked at the neighborhood from Boo’s porch and thought about the things he must have seen. She remembered Atticus saying how you really never know a man until you stand in his shoes, and she figured Atticus was right. Scout felt like she finally understood Boo now being with him and standing on his front porch. When Scout got home, she found Atticus reading in Jem’s room. Scout asked him to read it out loud, but she fell asleep. Atticus took her into her room and tucked her into bed. As she was falling asleep, Scout mumbled that Boo was really nice. Atticus answered “Most people are Scout, when you finally see them.”
