Objective:
To help students develop a deeper understanding of character traits, empathy, and personal values
through storytelling and reflection.
Materials Needed:
- 1/2 Crosswise Paper and pens/pencils
- A selection of short stories or excerpts from novels
Activity Steps:
1. Story Selection (15 minutes):
Each student selects a short story or an excerpt that resonates with them. This could be a story
they have read recently or a classic piece of literature. Encourage them to think about the
characters and the traits that stand out to them.
2. Character Analysis (20 minutes):
Students will write a brief character analysis of the main character in their chosen story on a 1/2
crosswise. They should focus on:
- Character Traits: What are the key traits of this character? (e.g., brave, kind, selfish)
- Motivations: What drives this character's actions?
- Growth:How does the character change throughout the story?
3. Group Sharing (30 minutes):
In small groups, students will share their character analyses. Each student will take turns
discussing:
- The character they chose and why.
- The traits they identified and how these traits influenced the character's decisions.
- Any personal connections they feel with the character or lessons learned from their journey.
4. Reflection (15 minutes):
After the group discussions, students will write a short reflection in the same paper on the
following prompts:
- What did you learn about character traits from your peers?
- How can understanding these traits help you in your own life?
- Are there traits you would like to develop in yourself?
5. Class Discussion (10 minutes):
Conclude the activity with a class discussion. Ask students to share insights from their reflections
and how they can apply these lessons to their own character development.
