Basic Civil Engineering Knowledge | Part - 2
Basic Civil Engineering Knowledge | Part - 2
I will be discussing some important information about basic civil engineering.
RCC Column Legs:-
The legs of an RCC column should be 90 times the diameter of the steel rod used. This ensures proper
stability and strength.
Washroom Slab Height:-
The height of a washroom slab should not be less than 7 feet from the ground floor. This provides
adequate space and comfort.
Steel Rods with Rings:-
Steel rods should have rings on their surface. If there are no rings, it is not recommended to use them
as they may not create a good bond between the steel and concrete.
Water Cement Ratio:-
The water cement ratio should be between 45 to 60 percent of the volume of cement used. This
ensures proper hydration and strength of the concrete.
Starter and Column Thickness:-
The thickness of the starter and column should be between 100 to 200 millimeters. This provides
adequate support and structural integrity.
Development Length in Beams:-
The development length in beams is important for both top and bottom rods. It ensures proper
reinforcement and strength.
Space between Door and Window:-
There should be a minimum space of 12 inches between the door and window. This allows for proper
ventilation and easy movement.
Storing Cement Bags:-
Cement bags should be stored at least 15 centimeters above the ground level and should not touch
the walls. This prevents moisture and maintains the quality of the cement.
Expiry Date of Cement:-
Do not buy cement if the expiry date is not written on the bag. Cement should be used within 90 days
or three months from the manufacturing date.
Storage of Cement:-
Cement should be stored in a dry place, away from moisture. This ensures the quality and
effectiveness of the cement.
Spacing and Diameter of Chairs:-
The maximum spacing between chairs should be 1 meter, and the diameter of the chair should not be
less than 12 millimeters. This ensures proper reinforcement in slabs and raft foundations.
Curing Time:-
The curing time for beams, columns, and slabs should not be less than 10 days. This allows the

Curing Time:- The curing time for beams, columns, and slabs should not be less than 10 days. This allows the

concrete to gain its full strength.

Choosing Square Columns:- When possible, choose square columns over rectangular or circular columns as they can support the maximum load.

Thank You.
