Common peroneal nerve

Common peroneal nerve :-smaller terminal branch of sciatic nerve Root value :- L4,5,S1,2 of dorsal division of ventral primary rami. Course :- •extends from superior angle of popliteal fossa to lateral angle.

  • Runs along medial border of bicep femoris.
  • Runs downward and forward and peirce the peroneus longus muscle and
  • divides into superficial and deep peroneal nerve.

Branches :-gives two types of branches i) Cutaneous branches ii) Articular branches

i) Cutaneous branches :-

  • Lateral Cutaneous nerve of the calf:- supply skin of upper ⅔of side of the leg
  • sural communicating nerve:- runs posteroleterally to calf and joins sural nerve ii) Articular branches :-
  • superior lateral genicular nerve:-supplies knee joint
  • inferior lateral genicular nerve:-supplies knee joint
  • Recurrent genicular nerve:-supplies tibialis anterior and knee joint

Muscle supplied by Deep peroneal nerve:-tibialis ant,extensor hallucis longus, extensor digitorum longus,ext digitorum brevis,ext hallucis brevis Superficial:- peroneus longus and brevis
