Software Computer software or just software is a collection of computer programs and related data that provides the instructions for telling a computer what to do and how to do it. In other words software is a set of programs, procedures, algorithms and its documentation concerned with the operation of a data processing system. e System Software - The set of programs that controls the function of the Hardware (the system) are known as System Software. They are commonly known as Operating systems. System software allows a user to load and execute programs. It controls the peripheral devices and allocates resources to users IN Case of a multi-user environment. E.g. MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows xP, SCO UnixWare, Novell NetWare , Sun Solaris, Redhat Linux.
