OD Exercise: Analyzing Files problem1 and problem2 - Prof. Vernon W. Pine, Study notes of Digital Signal Processing

An exercise for analyzing two files named problem1 and problem2 located in the directory ~pine/2230/od_demo. Students are required to determine file length, bytes per data item, offsets, and values using the od command. The document also includes specifications for each file and instructions for analyzing an unknown file.

od Exercise
(24 points)
In the directory ~pine/2230/od_demo, there are six files
main executable that produce sample
main.cc source code for main
makefile makefile to create main
sample data file that was analyzed in class
problem1 first file for analysis
problem2 second file for analysis
1) Analyze the file: problem1. Analyze means determine and record
a) The file length in bytes
b) The number of bytes for each data item in the file
c) The number of bytes offset for each data item in file
d) Value of each data item in the file (use od for this step)
i) Record the od command you used
ii) Record the od output for the command
Use a table format similar to that used in the analysis of the file sample. This assignment
must be word-processed.
File: problem1 specifications
1 integer
12 characters
1 double
2) Repeat step 1) for the file: problem2.
File: problem2 specifications
1 integer
1 double
22 characters
1 integer
3) Describe the approach you would use to analyze a data file, if you do not have the file
specification. Try your approach on the file unknown in the directory
