Matt Korn and Pooja gave today’s seminar. The title of their presentation was an Overview discussion with Schwab, with company affiliation being Schwab. Math Korn is a talent advisor and campus recruiter, and Pooja is a Software Engineer II for Charles Schwab. Matt started the seminar by conversing about the company culture and provided some background knowledge on the company. In brief, Matt described the company as a finance-based sector. However, Matt further elaborated that we would probably not be interacting face-to-face with customers as software engineers. However, we can find it very helpful to have a customer service-oriented skills set early on. An interesting statistic that Matt mentioned was that Texas would be where more future growth is to be expected, especially in Austin and the Forth-Worth area in Schwab for Software developers. Secondly, Matt talked about how the company routinely is awarded the title of “Best place to work at.” He expanded on that the company strives to attract great talent and retain talented employees by making their employees matter and helping them feel heard in the company. As mentioned by Matt, they are especially always looking for solid talent in students right off of college graduation. Pooja then mentioned her experience with the company entering first through the companies’ NERD program that helps students transition from education to enterprise coding environments. Finally, the seminar closed on some tips for seeking internships in Schwab - by preparing for the STAR technique-based questions (Where the company is primarily interested in knowing how you would react in stressful situations and not so much on what you already know - as long as you demonstrate your capabilities in the interview process). Overall, the seminar was informative as I was reminded of the STAR technique in the interview process and the importance of demonstrating your capabilities in an interview session.
