Service Learning Engagement and Weekly
Message Board Interaction

Statement of Service Learning Principles:
A significant amount of scholarship exists on service learning, and there is
no one way this educational model works or fails. The service learning
component of this class should provide you with a chance to contribute to
the education of others while learning. In addition, it should provide a
chance for the entire class to benefit from the educational experiences of
others (primarily via the message board). Service learning should not be
extractive, meaning that we should not be mining our service sites merely
for our own benefit. Instead, service learning should be collaborative, with
all parties benefiting from the exchange.
Contacting a Site and Establishing a Working Plan:
So far, I have contacted two possible sites for you to work with during the
semester: the campus YMCA and Centennial High School in Champaign. If
another literacy site is appealing to you, please do let me know so I can
approve your site.
Campus YMCA: tutoring program, all tutors must be screened for TB (free
of charge), undergo a brief interview, and agree to work at least two hours a
week as a tutor, probably beginning in September or October.
Centennial High School: break-out literacy groups, two participating
instructors, all tutors must submit to a background check and schedule for
two hours per week. (Accessible on the 4 Blue Bus Line.)
Writing About Your Experiences:
Each week, you will be expected to contribute at least one entry to the class
discussion board. Your entry can start a topic (or thread), contribute to an
existing thread, or be a direct response to an existing posting. The goal is

for you to write openly, descriptively, and analytically about your service learning. This should not be a chance for you to critique the instruction or the instructor. Writing on the message board could include but is not limited to: short expository essays, personal narratives, philosophical explorations, theoretical engagements, poetry, and fiction. The only thing I ask is that you be respectful of the other students in the class and the people (students, staff, teachers, etc.) at your site. As with all things on the internet, while our message board is "secure" there is no telling who could possibly read what is written there. Establishing Closure: While you are only required to perform 20 hours of service learning contact hours, you may volunteer to do more if you choose. Many who have engaged in service learning have gone on to form long-term mentoring relationships beyond the scope of the semester. However, you are not required to work more than the 20 specified hours. I do ask, however, that you communicate with your site coordinators and students you are working with when the end of those 20 hours approaches. Simply leaving a site without discussing closure can be one of the ways that service learning becomes extractive and damaging to the people at the site. Please act respectfully and responsibly. Assessment and Grading: This portion of your work for the class amounts to 20% of your grade; the overall workload has been lessened to accommodate the service learning component. Completion of 20 hours of service at an approved site (confirmed by your site coordinator) is required to achieve a grade in this portion of the class. Weekly participation in the message-board discussion will be graded for attention to detail, description, and analytical insight; engagement with other students in the class (online); and a demonstrated ability to address the main topics raised in class discussions and reading.
