  1. (a) What is: (i) A project? (ii) A successful project? (4 Marks)

(b) (i) What does the acronym PRINCE stand for? (1 Mark)

(ii) What is the scope of PRINCE2? (3 Marks)

(iii) Elaborate on each of the following assumptions that form the basis for the PRINCE2 Method:

  1. Projects are carried out in a changing environment.
  2. A project is successful only if all stakeholders are satisfied with the project outcome.
  3. Successful projects are business driven.
  4. Co-operation of all stakeholder parties in the project leads to more successful projects. (8 Marks)

(c) Discuss, in detail, why projects fail. (9 Marks)

  1. (a) Elaborate on each of the following PRINCE2 distinguishing characteristics: (i) Controlled start, middle, and end. (ii) Contracting out based on work packages (iii) Product-based planning (iv) Quality reviews. (v) Controlling change. (10 Marks)

(b) “PRICE2 is not intended to cover all subjects relevant to project manag ement”. Discuss, briefly. (5 Marks)

(c) Discuss, in detail, the “Plans” component of PRINCE2 methodology. (10 Marks)

  1. (a) In a study of teams of managers in business simulation games, Meredith Belbin identified that no one type of person makes an ideal team-player. The team-mix was most influential. Subsequently, Belbin identified eight team roles, which if filled within a team, gave the team a very good chance of success. Identify and describe the eight team roles documented by Belbin. (16 Marks)

(b) (i) Describe Johari’s window. (4 Marks) (ii) What use, if any, might a project manager make of Johari’s window? Support your presentation with suitable illustration(s). (3 Marks)

(c) List four characteristics of an outstanding team. (2 Marks)
