COORDINATE GEOMETRY Points to Remember 1. 2) 3) In order to locate the position of a point in a plane, we require two perpendicular lines. One of them is horizontal and other vertical. The plane is called Cartesian plane and the lines are known as x-axis and y-axis. The point of intersection of x-axis & y-axis is called origin. The coordinate axes divide the plane into four parts which are called quadrants. The distance of a point from y-axis is called x coordinate or abscissa and the distance from x axis is called y coordinate or ordinate. The coordinates of a point on x-axis are of the form (x,0) and on y-axis are (0, y). Coordinates of origin are (0, 0). The signs of a point in the four quadrants are (+, +), (-, +,), (-, —) and (+, -). COORDINATE GEOMETRY(MCQ) A policeman and a thief are equidistant from the jewel box.
