▶ 5 首 ■ 듹꺲ꃖ꠪: Love, Humanity ■
In the opening credits, metallic hands create a button-eyed ragdoll to resemble a young girl before sending it out into a void. Soon later, Coraline Jones moves with her family from Pontiac to a dilapidated Victorian-styled apartment named Pink Palace Apartments in Ashland, Oregon. The residents include Mr. Bobinsky, Miss Spink, Miss Forcible and Wyborn "Wybie" Lovat, who is the grandson of the landlady, Mrs. Lovat. Coraline also encounters a black cat, simply known as the Cat.
Neglected by her workaholic parents, Coraline decides to explore the apartment. Wybie gives her a ragdoll which eerily resembles her. She eventually stumbles upon a small brick-sealed door which can be unlocked only by a small black key. That night, Coraline follows a mouse through the door, where she discovers the bricks gone, replaced by a corridor. Coraline goes through into the Other World, where doubles of the real-world residents have buttons for eyes. Her Other Mother and Father are more warm and attentive than her real parents. After dinner, she goes to sleep in her Other Bedroom. To her dismay, Coraline wakes up in her real bedroom and is unable to convince her parents that she visited the Other World.
Despite vague warnings from her neighbors, Coraline frequents the Other World at night. She meets the mute Other Wybie, the Other Mr. Bobinsky, and the Other Misses Spink and Forcible, who are young and perform theatrical acts. When the Cat also enters the Other World, it is able to talk.
On the third visit, the Other Mother invites Coraline to stay forever, but buttons must be sewn over her eyes. Horrified, Coraline attempts to flee. The Cat reveals to her the true sinister nature of the Other Mother and the Other World. She demands the Other Mother let her go home, but the Other Mother transforms into a grotesque version of herself and imprisons Coraline in a dark chamber behind a mirror.

NOTE TAKING
You stomp too hard and you'll fall in it.
Oh!
See?
It's supposed to be so deep, if you fell to the bottom and looked up,
you'd see a sky full of stars in the middle of the day.
Ha.
Surprised she let you move in.
My gramma, she owns the Pink Palace.
Won't rent to people with kids.
What do you mean?
I'm not supposed to talk about it.
I'm Wybie.
Wybie Lovat.
Wybie?
Short for Wyborne.
Not my idea, of course.
What'd you get saddled with?
I almost fell down a well yesterday, Mom.
Uh-huh.
I would've died.
That's nice.
Hmm.
NOTE TAKING
Hey, Mom. Where does this door go?
I'm really, really busy.
I think it's locked. Please!
Will you stop pestering me if I do this for you? Fine.
Bricks? I don't get it.
They must've closed this off when they divided up the house.
You're kidding. And why is the door so small?
We made a deal! Zip it!
You didn't lock it.
NOTE TAKING
Good night, Wybie.
You could stay here forever if you want to.
Really?
Sure. We'll sing and play games, and Mother will cook your favorite meals.
There's one tiny little thing we need to do.
What's that?
Well, it's a surprise. For you, our little doll.
Black is traditional. But if you'd prefer pink or vermillion or chartreuse... Though you might make me jealous.
No way! You're not sewing buttons in my eyes!
NOTE TAKING
One thing that's really interesting to me about the Dreyfus Affair is this question of why the officers were so convinced that Dreyfus was guilty. I mean, you might even assume that they were setting him up, that they were intentionally framing him. But historians don't think that's what happened. As far as we can tell, the officers genuinely believed that the case against Dreyfus was strong. Which makes you wonder: What does it say about the human mind that we can find such paltry evidence to be compelling enough to convict a man?
Well, this is a case of what scientists call "motivated reasoning." It's this phenomenon in which our unconscious motivations, our desires and fears, shape the way we interpret information. Some information, some ideas, feel like our allies. We want them to win. We want to defend them. And other information or ideas are the enemy, and we want to shoot them down. So this is why I call motivated reasoning, "soldier mindset."
So to me, Picquart is a poster child for what I call "scout mindset." It's the drive not to make one idea win or another lose, but just to see what's really there as honestly and accurately as you can, even if it's not pretty or convenient or pleasant. This mindset is what I'm personally passionate about. And I've spent the last few years examining and trying to figure out what causes scout mindset. Why are some people, sometimes at least, able to cut through their own prejudices and biases and motivations and just try to see the facts and the evidence as objectively as they can?
