his course deals with the discussion of how to write an essay in English
and it is completed with the writing exercises to practice writing. It is
designed to give you the opportunity to learn the theory of essay writing and
improve essay writing skills in English through practicing. To improve writing
competence, you need to learn topics discussed in this course which include
elements of paragraph, elements of essay and other types of essays such as
narrative, description, exposition (using the example and illustration,
comparison and contrast, classification, process analysis, cause and effect,
definition), and argumentation. You also need to learn models of essays,
practice writing, do all writing exercises, make an writing outline, and write
essays based on the outline that has been made. Your competency in writing
assay is measured by using a form of essay tests conducted at the end of the
semester.
The theoretical discussion will lead you to the theoretical assay writing.
From this basis you go further to the practice writing by applying the theoretical
assay writing. Based on the theoretical assay writing and by doing a lot of
writing practice you will get the ability to write an assay in English. Types of
essay you will learn and practice would be in the following.
1. Module 1:The Paragraph
In this module you will learn how to write a good paragraph. You will
practice to write topic sentence and support sentences, write paragraph
which is coherence and unity.
2. Module 2: The assay
Module 2 will teach you how to write an essay and practice writing it. You
will are expected to be able to choose a topic for an essay, write a thesis
statement, develop introductory paragraph based on the chosen topic,
develop body paragraphs on a topic that has been selected, develop a
concluding paragraph on the topic selected, create an outline for an essay,
and finally write an essay based on the outline have been made.
3. Module 3: Narrative essay
After studying Module 3 students are expected to: identify characteristic
narrative essay, write a series of events ever experienced., write habits by
certain community groups, write a series of events ever experienced by a
description using words, write habits by certain groups to use the words of

Module 4: Descriptive writing In this module you will practice ho to create an outline to describe a place, create a thesis statement, develop an essay in the form of descriptions of places based on the outline which consists of introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and concluding paragraph.
  2. Module 5: The Expository Essay In this module you will learn to develop an essay in the form of exposition; create an outline for developing an essay in the form of exposition, write a thesis statement based on the topic and outline. Develop the introductory paragraph, develop a body paragraph, and develop a concluding paragraph.
  3. Module 6: The Example and Illustration Essay In this module you will learn theoretical exposition by using the example and illustration. You will practice to create an outline for writing example/ illustration essay on topic chosen, create a thesis statement to develop the example and illustration essays, develop introductory paragraph for example/illustration essay, developed the first body paragraph for example, developing a second body paragraph for example, develop the concluding paragraph of the example/illustration essay, compile example/illustration essay fully and coherently using appropriate transitional words.
  4. Module 7: The Comparison and Contrast Essay In Module 7 you will learn how to develop a comparison and contrast essay, and you will practice to create an outline, develop a thesis statement, write the introductory paragraph based on the outline that have been made, write a paragraph based on the block method body, write a body paragraph by point by point method.
  5. Module 8: The Classification Essay In this module you will learn how to write classification essay. You will practice to choose a topic or object that can be classified according to the characteristics of the object, create a diagram in accordance with the selected topic, create a thesis statement for the classification essay, develop the introductory paragraph, a body paragraph and a concluding paragraph. In writing classification essay you have to compile by using the appropriate signal words.
