JPN327 Advanced Reading & Writing Kanji Characters
Spring 2021
Class: online
Instructor: Midori Tanaka
I. Prerequisite
JPN317C or the equivalent with a grade of at least C (or with a passing grade D- or above if you
have finished it in 2020 Spring/Fall)
II. Course Objectives
•This class will help students build more advanced vocabulary and kanji knowledge through
systematic study of kanji
•This class involves a lot of daily self-study. Self-discipline and dedication are necessary parts of
the course work.
III. Course Materials
Required
1) Textbooks:
1. にほんご漢字トレーニング Nihongo Kanji Training by Mariko Matuura et al. (2011)
2. 基本漢字 500 Basic Kanji BookVol.1, by Chieko Kano et al. (2010) Bonjinsha
3. 基本漢字 500 Basic Kanji BookVol.2, by Chieko Kano et al. (2009) Bonjinsha
Older editions of Basic Kanji Books are preferred (than the newest ones published in 2015 ~.)
2) Course handouts and homework assignments are or will be on Canvas.

4) Robust wifi connection (for Zoom meetings and online assignments, quizzes, and exams)
5) A headset with microphone (e.g. earbuds) and (built-in) (web) camera (your face has to be
visible) during Zoom class.
6) Proctorio on Canvas (please install using Google Chrome) which requires a built-in (web)
camera.

IV. Class Format
•JPN327 is a synchronous course. The class meets at Zoom. Make sure you have a robust wifi
especially when taking quizzes and exams. Please sit in a quiet place and use a headset with
microphone. You must make your face visible during the class by using a camera.
•Be prepare for the class and review after the class according to the schedule. During the class,
participate in the class actively. Do not do your online homework or take online tests during
class.
•Read your e-mails daily for important announcements and updates, etc.
•See the course schedule for the class activities and due dates of assignments, quizzes, and exams.

  5. Attendance & Participation •Please register your Zoom account using your UT official name and show yourself visible during Zoom by using a camera. Using a computer (instead a smart phone) and a headset with microphone will be preferred. Please contact me privately asap if you have issues regarding equipment.
  • Join the class in time, and do not disturb the class by coming late or leaving before the end of the class. Please log onto Canvas and Zoom apps a bit earlier and join Zoom before the class starts. •You are required to attend all classes and to prepare for the class in advance according to the schedule; however, you will not be penalized for your absences. •No food or chewing gum is allowed during class.
  • Please turn off all other unnecessary gadgets, such as cellular phone, tablet, apple watch etc. and do not place them on your desk or in your lap. Do not use them during the class.
  • You are not allowed to use any recording devices (e.g. voice recorder, camera. etc.) in class. Only your instructor has a right to record the classes and share them on Canvas. Class recordings are reserved only for students in this class for educational purposes and are protected under FERPA. The recordings should not be shared outside the class in any form. Violation of this restriction by a student could lead to Student Misconduct proceedings. •The student must notify the instructor at least 14 days prior to the classes scheduled of dates s/he will be absent to observe a religious holy day. •There will be absolutely no make-up for missed course requirements such as assignments, quizzes, exams, etc. listed below. Check the course schedule and follow the deadlines. •Your instructor will abide by the above-mentioned rules very strictly and reserves the right to judge whether to allow work to be made up or not in unexpected circumstances such as family emergencies.

  • Please finish each assignment by deadline date. When submitting, follow the proper instruction; otherwise you may need to resubmit. See the instructions at the end of the course schedule. Your student number and joshu name will be sent soon. •A score which is less than 0.5(50%) will receive 0 point. The second decimal place will be rounded off. (e.g. 0.95 will be 1, 0.94 will be 0.9, and so forth)
  • The two lowest scores will drop.
  • When typing is required, please type. Do not “cut & paste” from other resources. Canvas may not recognize outside fonts. Please type the font ”全⾓ full-size” instead “半⾓ half-size.” Do not add
