National Culture: Measuring culture Gert Hofstede: Six dimensions

1. Power distance

  • The extent to which a society accepts that power is distributed unequally 2. Uncertainty avoidance
  • The extent to which a society feels threatened by uncertain or ambiguous situations 3. Individualism vs Collectivism
  • Individualism: A loosely-knit social framework in society
  • Collectivism: A tight-knit social framework of “in-groups and “out-groups” 4. Masculinity vs Femininity :
  • The extent to which the dominant values in society are assertiveness, money, material things, not caring for others, quality of life and people.

Organisation Culture: Hofstede’s eight dimensions

1. Means-oriented vs Goal-oriented

  • How is work carried out? Focus on work practices, or objectives? 2. Internally-driven vs Externally-driven?
  • Company knows best, or customer knows best? 3. Easygoing work discipline vs Strict work discipline
  • Level of internal structure, control, checking

4. Local vs Professional

  • Employees identify with the boss, or with the job 5. Open-system vs Closed-system
  • Accessibility; Insiders and Outsiders 6. Employee-oriented vs Work-oriented
  • Management philosophy on personal problems, job performance 7. Acceptance of leadership style
  • Do employees like the leadership style? 8. Degree of identification with your organisation
  • Affinity; Loyalty Planning for cultural differences
