A RANGE OF EFFECTIVE

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

Day to day interaction with my project group can be difficult as we come from different year groups and specialisms. The only time I am able to communicate with my project group face-to-face is during project time. This means I have to use alternative methods of communication - the main form of communication I use is email. I use email to communicate with my group as it is a simple and quick way to send my team members messages and work. As the report lead, I am tasked with creating the final report for the group meaning I have to group everyone’s work together.

Interaction in project time

Project time occurs twice a week, on a Wednesday and Friday afternoon. During this time, communication in group is critical for the success of the project. In this time, I must balance my time between communicating with the group and creating the final report. This time is important for me to go through work with team members so it can be entered into the report. I must be able to communicate well with my group so I use a variety of interpersonal skills. I have to adapt the way I address people in my project group as there is a hierarchal structure:

This means that I have to adapt the way I speak to each person; for example, I would speak differently to my project manager than I would to the data collection specialist. I also have to change the terminology I used because of the different specialisms people study. I may use different terminology with the engineers than I would with the people studying IT as they might not understand what I’m saying. Using these skills makes communication more effective when speaking face to face with my project team.
