  1. 5th Grade Mathematics - Adding and Subtracting Fractions
  2. Standards 5.NF.A Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions. 5.NF.A.1 Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. 5.NF.A.2 Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. Day 19 Unit Review Go over Quiz 3 scores with students Practice test in class, study guide to be completed independently Day 20 Unit Test 10 Multiple Choice questions, 3 fill- in-the-blank questions, and 2 short response questions.

on their ability to show their work and understanding of the processes learned, as well as their correctness in their answers. The assessment breakdown is as follows: 5 multiple choice questions on the topic of adding fractions or mixed numbers together, 5 multiple choice questions on the topic of subtracting fractions or mixed numbers, 3 models involving adding or subtracting fractions or mixed numbers where students will fill-in-the-blanks of the model, and 2 short response questions; one word problem involving addition of fractions, one word problem involving subtraction of fractions. These questions will be very similar to the questions seen throughout the quizzes and exit tickets, and are aligned with the state standards of the unit. Pre-Assessment The pre-test will be administered on day 1 of the unit. The pre-test consists of 15 multiple choice questions, with 5 of them assessing key prior knowledge, and 10 of them assessing their understanding of upcoming topics they will be learning. The results of this pre- assessment will be used to plan and pace lessons as well as plan to differentiate when needed. Formative Assessments Formative assessments will be strategically integrated on a recurring basis throughout the unit to continuously monitor student progress and guide instructional decisions. I will use a variety of formative assessments, including daily exit tickets, classwork, and observational assessments during group activities. Exit tickets will be

administered at the end of every lesson, consisting of quick, focused questions that assess students’ understanding of the day’s key concept, such as finding a common denominator or simplifying a fraction. These exit tickets will provide immediate feedback, allowing me to identify and address any misconceptions before the next lesson. Classwork and problem sets will also serve as daily formative assessments, giving students opportunities to apply what they've learned in a supported environment. As students work on these tasks individually or in small groups, I will circulate the room, observing their problem-solving processes and offering real-time guidance. This will help me assess their grasp of the material in a less formal setting and adjust my instruction as needed. By using these formative assessments regularly, I can create a responsive learning environment where instruction is tailored to meet students' evolving needs, ensuring that they are well-prepared for the more formal assessments later in the unit. Benchmark and Interim Assessments The measurement topic for the unit is directly aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards for Mathematics, specifically those addressing Number and Operations— Fractions in Grade 5. These standards emphasize students' ability to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, solve word problems involving these operations, and understand the relationship between fractions and whole numbers. This alignment ensures that the content of this unit prepares students for the district or state benchmark
