TASK 4

SUPPORTING CURRICULUM IMPLEMENTATION

A. Curriculum Implementation Plan

1. Overview of the Curriculum. Math & You (n.d.) is a Big Ideas Learning K-12 program. It is a comprehensive curriculum that focuses on making connections between mathematics and the real world. It is designed to provide critical thinking and accuracy that incorporates understanding, fluency, and real-life application. 2. Plan for Curriculum Implementation a. Discuss the rationale for implementing the curriculum. Math & You allows students to create a solid foundation in math and develop stronger conceptual understandings. The program provides opportunities for learners to dig deeper and make interdisciplinary connections b. Discuss the expected outcome(s) from the implementation of the curriculum. Math & You is designed to allow teachers to provide intervention and acceleration for all students. It intends to encourage learners to make connections among math concepts as well as other contents on deeper levels of understanding, to help prepare them for their futures. c. Provide a timeline with the key components for implementing the curriculum. May-June 2024: Teacher Training – familiarize units and pacing as well as digital platform

District Curriculum Administrators: It the responsibility of the district to provide ongoing professional development to teachers. e. Discuss the resource(s) and technology necessary for the implementation of the curriculum. Both digital and non-digital resources. Teachers require skill identifications and their connections to NYS Next Generation Standards. A digital experience that provides assessments and real-time reporting allows for teachers to adapt and adjust to improve student learning. Support via solution videos, math tools, extra practice, and real-life connections. f. Select two groups of stakeholders from the following list and discuss a separate strategy for collaborating with each group:

  • students: Determine which resources have been the strongest scaffolds to support students’ development as a communicator and collaborator. Determine which resources have been the strongest scaffolds to support students’ conceptual understanding.
  • parents/guardians: Determine the key considerations schools should be aware of regarding digital resources and technology. Are there difficulties accessing Wi-Fi or other issues regarding using technology at home. Work with the family to best support the family and the student. Provide “parent-education nights” explaining the new curriculum and how parents/guardians can best help the student at home. 3. Plan for supporting teachers through the curriculum implementation process by doing the following:

a. Discuss the goal for supporting teachers through the curriculum implementation process. Supporting teachers through the process allows for teachers to effectively implement the curriculum and support individual students. It further develops teachers’ skills in using the resources appropriately and fully. To properly implement a new curriculum a math curriculum coach is essential. This person needs to be well-versed in the NYS Next Generation Standards, the curriculum as well as the Math & You materials. This coach should work with teachers as mentor and co- teacher. With the co-teaching model teachers are experiencing how specific lessons should be implemented thus easing teacher anxiety. Professional development should be provided, both in person and online. This will help build teacher and leader knowledge of the curriculum. b. Create a professional development plan to support teachers. Spring training for teachers by the Math & You program experts. Fall training with a local Lead Teacher/Coach. Monthly support by the Coach provides feedback and support for continuous improvements for implementing the curriculum. Mentoring, coaching and training opportunities for all teachers experienced and new should be provided via professional development. Opportunities for teams of teachers will be necessary for teachers to collaborate and share ideas. c. Discuss two strategies to support teachers’ implementation of the curriculum.

  1. Mapping out the curriculum units and how each unit corresponds with the NYS Next Generation Standards. This will ensure necessary standards are taught. Allowing teacher input in the mapping of the curriculum ensures teachers are

is monitored gaps are identified, what is successful and what possibly needs improvement ( What does it take to implement a strong curriculum effectively? Part 2: What happens in districts and schools where new instructional materials lead to greater student learning? n.d.). b. Discuss two strategies for monitoring the implementation plan.

  1. Qualitative Data: Attend team-teachers’ planning sessions and discuss teacher feedback about the program. Provide support that is not tied to teacher evaluations. Identifying difficulties teachers are facing allows administrators the opportunity to provide training or alternative ideas that improve instructional practice.
  2. Quantitative Data: Use student scores, and statistics along with teacher, student and parent feedback, to measure the success of the new curriculum.
