Database Design and Modeling, Study notes of Computer science

A comprehensive guide to developing a conceptual and logical data model for a database system. It covers the key steps involved in the database design process, including creating an entity relationship diagram (erd) using visio or another case tool, incorporating database management system constraints, normalizing data, and identifying data attributes, data types, primary keys, foreign keys, indexes, and validation rules. The document also emphasizes the importance of clear team communication, responsibilities, and participation in the database design process. By studying this document, students can gain a deeper understanding of the principles and best practices of database design, which are essential for developing robust and efficient database systems.

  1. Develop a conceptual model: a) Use Visio (or another computer-aided software engineering (CASE) or diagramming software) to create an ERD (Draft). b) Show how objects are related – clarify the cardinality of relationships. c) Copy the ERD (Entity Relationship Diagram) to the word document created earlier. Conceptual model:
  2. Make the additional changes. a) Include database management system constraints in your design. b) Split data across the tables (normalize data, if required). c) Identify data attributes, data types, primary keys, foreign keys, indexes, and validation rules according to requirements. d) Identify referential integrity constraints. e) Update the ERD (Final conceptual and logical model). Compare it with conceptual model created in 1a. f) Copy the ERD (Final) to the word document created earlier. g) Document all changes in database design according to requirements/policies/procedures.
