DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
A. TOTAL CREDITS: The Bachelor of Arts degree requires the completion of 128 credits, 64 of which must be done in the College (courses with a
-UA suffix since summer 2011). Up to 16 credits outside of CAS (non-UA), including non-liberal arts credits earned at another university, may count
towards the degree. Once matriculated in the College, students will not receive credit for coursework done in the School of Professional Studies
(SPS) or in the Liberal Studies Program (-UF courses), nor will they receive credit for Internships or Independent Studies done outside of the College.

C. MAJOR: Students must complete a major offered through the College of Arts and Science. Courses taken p ass/fail or in which a students has earned
below a “C” cannot fulfill m ajor requirements. Students sh ould consult their Academic Requirem ents Report and their dep artmental advisor to determine
remaining requirements for the major.
D. COLLEGE CORE CURRICULUM (CORE): S tudents are required to c omplete the components of th e College Core Curriculum, eith er through specific
coursework or by examinati on. For a complete list of cours es and examinations that satisf y Core requirements, please visit the C ore website at
core.cas.nyu.edu. Cours es taken pass/fail cannot fulfill Cor e requirements.
1. Foreign Language: Students are required to demonstrate pr oficiency in a foreign language thr ough the Intermediate II level. Pr oficiency is
determined by successf ul completion of a College cours e at the Intermediate II level or higher, ap proved test credit or suff icient SAT II scores in a
foreign language, or exemption t hrough Placement Examin ation. Students whose second ary schooling was in a langu age other than English or who
complete the BS/BS program are exempt from this requiremen t.
2. Expository Writing: All students must complete an exposit ory writing course and pass th e English Proficiency Examinat ion.
Writing the Essay (EXPOS-U A 1): Students in the Opportun ities Program (HEOP/CSTEP) s atisfy this requirement through succ essful
completion of Writing I & II (W RI-UF 1001/WRII-UF 1002). Intern ational Students satisfy this req uirement through the succ essful completion of
International Writing W orkshop I & II (EXPOS-UA 4/9). Transf er students may submit c ollege writing samples to the E xpository Writing Program to
petition for a waiver for this r equirement (see nyu.edu/c as/ewp/html/transfer.html).
English Proficiency Exam: Stu dents who earn a “C” or high er in Writing the Essay or W riting II will be granted a pass aut omatically.
International students must t ake the exam at the end of the Int ernational Writing sequenc e. Transfer students must take th e exam during their first
term.
3. Foundations of Contemporary Culture (FCC): Students must complete a series of four requir ements in the Humanities and S ocial Sciences.

4. Foundations of Scientific Inqu iry (FSI): Students must c omplete a series of three coordin ated courses in Mathematics and the Natural Sciences
designed for non-science majors. S tudents who major in the N atural Sciences, complete the preh ealth program, or who ar e in the combined BS/BS
program are exempt from the FS I component.
Quantitative Reasoning (C ORE-UA 1--): Students can als o satisfy this component by c ompleting an approved dep artmental course in
Calculus or Statistics, or by ear ning test credit (e.g., AP, IB) in Calculus or Statistics.
Physical Science (CORE-UA 2--): Students can also satisfy this component with approved test credit in the physical sciences, or by
completing an approved departmental course in Chemistry or Physics.
Life Science (CORE-UA 3--): Students can also satisfy this component by completing Human Evolution (ANTH-UA 2) or both
Principles of Biology II (BIOL-UA 12) and Principles of Biology Lab (BIOL-UA 123).
Students can satisfy both Physical Science and Life Science with approved test credit in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, or by
completing an approved two-course sequence Chemistry or Physics.

  1. Foreign Language : Students are required to demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language through the Intermediate II level. Proficiency is determined by successful completion of a College course at the Intermediate II level or higher, approved test credit or sufficient SAT II scores in a foreign language, or exemption through Placement Examination. Students whose secondary schooling was in a language other than English or who complete the BS/BS program are exempt from this requirement.
  2. Expository Writing : All students must complete an expository writing course and pass the English Proficiency Examination.

Writing the Essay (EXPOS-UA 1) : Students in the Opportunities Program (HEOP/CSTEP) satisfy this requirement through successful completion of Writing I & II (WRI-UF 1001/WRII-UF 1002).
