Developing a Thematic Unit ECD 315: Curriculum Planning and Design for Early Learners Concept Map
Theme of the Unit The theme of this unit is Insects and Bugs. It is important for children to be able to identify the difference between bugs and animals, as well as sea creatures. Children in the preschool age group usually have a tough time identifying why certain things are certain things. Children throughout this theme will be able to grasp the concept of insects and bugs fully. Creative Arts Lesson Content Area or Developmental Focus: Creative Arts Age/Grade of Children: Preschool Length of Lesson: 25 minutes Goal To have the children understand Insects Objective Standards Included Fine and gross motor skills Hand-eye coordination Color recognition Materials Construction paper Markers Crayons Scissors
Closing The children will learn different ways to identify insects by colors, legs, and sizes. Fine and Gross Motor Skills Lesson Content Area or Developmental Focus: Fine and Gross Motor Skills lesson Age/Grade of Children: Preschool Length of Lesson: 30 minutes Goal To have the children have fun while using their fine and gross motor skills subconsciously. Objective Standards Included Fine and gross motor skills Hand-eye coordination Color recognition Materials Balls Hula-hoops chalk Introduction The children will build an insect using a ball for the head, a hula-hoop for the body, and draw the legs and markings with chalk. Lesson Development While doing this lesson the children will be able to understand the basic body parts of an insect, and also get to know how many legs/wings are on each insect. Differentiation Help with counting, drawing, and placing the objects. Assessment (Practice/ Checking for Understanding) Practicing/ checking will contain the teacher seeing that the children are able to identify the objects of the insects.
Closing The Children will grasp the concept of insects and how to make them with different objects.
