DISABILITY EXPERIENCE EXERCISE

OT 1: Introduction to Occupational Therapy

A. Overview of the experience

  • The type of disability we simulated is an individual/subject with a fractured left arm. Please note that this is just a simulation and no one was hurt during the event. Individual experiences can vary, always consult/seek prompt medical attention from healthcare professional.
  • Activities done: Folding Clothes Cleaning/Sweeping Organizing Books Washing Utensils

However, it’s important to remember that everyone’s reaction can be different, and it can be influenced by their personal experiences, their understanding of the situation, and their relationship with the person who has the fractured arm.

  • I found my home environment to be both a source of comfort and a series of obstacles. The clutter that once seemed harmless now appeared as potential hazards, threatening to cause further harm if I to trip or fall. However, with the help of my family, they cleared the clutter, secured loose rugs, and added extra lighting to make the home safer and more navigable. Bathroom was equipped with assistive devices like a long-handled sponge and a raised toilet seat, which made personal care tasks easier. My family also installed handrails and grab bars in crucial areas around the house to provide additional support. However, not all tasks could be managed alone. Cooking, cleaning, shopping, and driving became significantly more challenging. Here, the people in my life played a crucial role. My family, friends, and neighbors offered their assistance, helping me with these tasks. Their support was invaluable, making my daily life manageable and less stressful. On the other hand, any physical contact or activity that increased the risk of falling could lead to further injury. This was a hindrance that I found particularly frustrating. In the end, while the fractured arm brought about many changes and challenges in my life, the modifications to the environment and the support from the people around me played a significant role in helping me adapt to these new circumstances. It was a journey of resilience and adaptation, a testament to human spirit and the power of community support.
  • Having a fractured arm can lead to several realizations. It can make me/us aware of the challenges that come with physical disabilities, even temporary ones. It can highlight the importance of accessibility and the need for modifications in the environment to accommodate different abilities. It can also underscore the value of support from others, whether it’s in the form of physical assistance or emotional support. As for how it can change existing views about disability, it’s important to note that a fractured arm, while temporary, can still be considered a disability under certain circumstances. This can challenge the common perception that disabilities are always permanent. It can also highlight the fact that disabilities can vary greatly in terms of their impact on daily life. Moreover, experiencing a temporary disability like a fractured arm can foster empathy and understanding towards people with disabilities. It can make us more aware of the barriers we face and the changes that need to be made in society to ensure inclusivity and accessibility.
