  • Prejudice = an unjustified attitude toward members of a group - Racism is a subset of the domain of prejudice - Sexism is another subset

Modern sexism

  • Blatant (overt) sexism: visible discrimination against women
  • Subtle sexism: unequal treatment that we have internalized as “normal”
  • Covert sexism: deliberately hidden and difficult to document

Who is legally protected against

discrimination?

  • Groups defined by race, color, religion, or national origin
  • Groups defined by gender
  • Groups defined by age
  • People with disabilities
  • *In some jurisdictions, people with a homosexual sexual orientation

Hate crimes

  • Most extreme form of prejudice/ discrimination
  • Words or actions intended to harm an individual SOLELY BECAUSE of his/her membership in a minority group
  • Threatening implications for other members of the same group

Stats on hate crimes

  • FBI estimates that over 8,000 hate crimes were committed in U.S. in 1997 alone
  • Principal targets are lesbians and gay men
  • Some states double or triple the minimum sentence for crimes motivated by racism, anti-Semitism, or homophobia
  • Only 19 states include sexual orientation in hate-crime legislation
