Normal lungs (gross) Edematous lungs (gross)
Description:
The plural surface is smooth and shiny with a
color of pink all throughout.
Description:
The lobes of the lung are firm, fail to collapse,
have an irregular surface that is mottled pink to
dark red, and a frothy clear fluid is seen on the cut
surface.
Normal spleen (gross) Congested spleen (gross)
Description:
The normal splenic surface is smooth and with a
dark red color all throughout.
Description:
The spleen is enlarged, deeply congested with a
thickened capsule. The section surface showed a
graytan in color parenchyma.
Normal spleen (microscopic) Congested spleen (microscopic)
Description: Hematoxylin and Eosin, 12.5x
The parenchyma of the spleen is organized
into red and white pulp and the trabeculae
extend inward from the capsule which is seen
throughout the red pulp.
Description: Hematoxylin and Eosin, 25x
The sinuses appeared dilated and congested
and there is an increased fibrosis seen in the
red pulp. There is also a thickened capsule and
trabeculae seen.
Normal lungs (microscopic) Hemorrhagic lungs (microscopic)
Description: Hematoxylin and Eosin
The normal lung section has an alveoli which has
thin walls, clear or empty lumen, and there are
no thickening or fibrosis of the interstitium.
Description: Hematoxylin and Eosin
The section shows alveolar lumina with variable
amounts of hemorrhage, fibrin and edema. There
is a disruption of alveolar septa and it is
segmentally expanded by congestion and edema.
Normal lungs (gross) Lungs with thrombus (gross)
Description: Lung, Cow
The normal lung shows no thickening or fibrosis
and has a red color.
Description: Lung, Cow
The lung has variably sized raised, yellow to pale
red dry areas (necrosis) with marked interlobular
fibrosis and enlarged thrombosed lymph vessels.
Normal kidney (gross) Infarcted kidney (gross)
Description:
The normal kidney has a reddish-brown color and
shows visible margins between medullary
pyramids.
Description:
The kidney is mottled dark red and there are large
wedge shaped areas of acute infarction
characterized by hemorrhage and coagulative
necrosis of the cortex and medulla.
Normal kidney (microscopic) Infarcted kidney (microscopic)
Description: Glomerulus, Hematoxylin and Eosin
The normal kidney section shows a clear capsular
space, distinct glomerular capillaries, and visible
renal (distal) tubule lumen.
Description: Glomerulus, Hematoxylin and Eosin
The cells in the infarcted area show loss of cellular
detail. The glomeruli contains an abundant fibrin
within the glomerular capillaries occupying the
whole glomerular space and the renal tubules are
necrotic wherein epithelial cells are
hypereosinophilic and slough into the lumen.
