The 1st^ place winner last 2019 of Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, which is now on its 69th^ year. “The Art of the Missing” by Jocelyn G. Nicolas The first-time submission of Jocelyn G. Nicolas is her first prize for Essay in English, “The Art of the Missing”. She wrote her essay due to her annulment in marriage. Jocelyn said that the essay she submitted is an experience she described as truly cathartic. A mutual separation, we think isn’t painful, how about if it is annulment? Marriage is very sacred for shows the love and vows of a couple, marriage is very important to a couple who loves each other, but how about the ones who are engaged to fix marriages. All things have an end, a painful truth that applies to all of us. They say annulment stories doesn’t have a great impact in our society and it doesn’t have a contribution, promises isn’t meant to be broken, but the person who promises is the one who loses his responsibility. People nowadays, fear to talk about the idea of separation, annulment, and divorce, how can we thrive it, if we fear about it. All of us sometimes afraid of taking up decisions, I questioned myself “How did Jocelyn conquer this experience of her life?” I am like she’s so brave and very tough. The idea of losing someone is like failure, but that’s the idea, for me there is more in losing, maybe in terms of losing we can find ourselves and even reach our dreams. Peace isn’t given for me, but letting things can give it. If it isn’t working anymore we need to throw it off, you can fix it, but there a thing they called ‘what if’. Jocelyn Nicolas is a woman who have a dream to become someone different whose footprints show the undying legacy of a woman, a dream that possess the humanity to be different and overcome the immaturity of the humans, a dream that’ll make a great gratitude in living afar from the comfort zone of her chosen destination.
