EDUCATION AMIDST PANDEMIC

Sudden twists and turns occurred when COVID-19 changed all of what is planned for the year 2020 until present. Stock market hits its lowest in years, some countries on the verge of recession. Health care systems were put into test. But, as they always say, life must go on. Among all things which were greatly affected by the pandemic was education. In our country, regular classes, which is composed of entirely lectures, recitations, quizzes, group discussions, projects, quarterly examinations, and the like. Face-to-face sessions were put into halt so as to reduce or prevent contraction of the dreaded disease. Following the decision to revoke the earlier imposition of the temporary academic freeze, alternatives were offered to prevent the existence of educational gap. Two methods of learning were introduced: Modular and Online learning, or, at the option of the student, Blended learning. In the former, students are given their lessons through photocopied pages of their books to be distributed by their respective advisers, while in the latter, lectures are to be conducted through online platforms such as zoom, google meet and the other medium using the internet. Pros and cons including hasty generalizations and stereotypes were given by the public about the new mode of learning for students as a means to adapt to the pandemic. Some were about the teaching approach, its downside, and challenges. Some question the workload of teachers nowadays. They were too quick to judge that the situation has lighten the tasks and responsibilities of the instructors. Change is constant. Our world is evolving. So are we when we adapt to these deviations. Questions are thrown about the method of learning nowadays. As far as modular approach, it is but a bit unfair for those parents who were not able to finish at least the secondary level of learning. They are lucky enough if one of their relatives have the capability of assisting them in teaching their children about their lessons nowadays as the role of the teacher is reduced to supervisorial and monitoring. In addition, these parents, who, at the minimum, has reached the 6th^ grade or has not even completed the primary level of education, often accept the fact that their children are even smarter than they are, so they do not have the capability if not, the right to teach them their lessons. This is one of the real challenges being faced by this kind of learning style, the actual

grasp of the lessons being the burden of parents whose educational attainment are even unknown to the teachers. On the other hand, for online learning, internet connection has always posed an issue. For it to be credible, stable connection is a must. At present, although the internet service providers have vowed to improve their services, interruptions have become rampant. How bad is it? Imagine being in the middle of an online class being called to recite by your teacher, but at the exact moment, your application closes because of poor connection. It is not even irritating. It is disgusting. For teachers, instructors, and professors, their duty and concerns have even become two- fold from the usual conduct of classes pre-pandemic. Contrary to what most people believe, our teachers have a ton of paper work to do in compliance with the memorandums laid down by their department, that aside from having to perform online lectures and take part in the distribution of modules. Some also have to attend seminars online and meetings as well. They even have to make their lesson plans and all other related documentations. To debunk those stereotypes, ask your distant relatives whose profession is into teaching. Be that as it may, children are still lucky to have the gift of education. No one can ever steal the same from you. It is the only thing which your parents can impart to you as their legacy. But, to be frank, academic freeze should have been imposed permanently until such time that vaccines have already been dispensed to the majority of our population. However, we all have our opinions. We can all agree to disagree. One thing is for sure, learning should be open and fairly given to all, in all means possible and in the best ways available.
